How to find an in-home caregiver in Chehalis
Chehalis is a small Lewis County city that is slowly growing: the Census Bureau put it at 7,764 people in July 2025, compared with 7,438 at the April 2020 base. The ACS 2020–2024 profile counts 1,019 people aged 65 and over (13.4%, with a margin of ±172), and among them 58.9% (±8.7 points) report a disability. Nearly three households in ten (29.9%) contain someone 65 or older, and in 9.2% of all households a woman of that age lives alone.
Transport deserves a line in your post. In 13.3% of Chehalis homes nobody has a vehicle, and three in four workers (75.0%) drive to work alone. Someone with a car, or with experience booking Lewis County Transit's door-to-door vans, may matter as much as one who can cook. English is the only language spoken at home for 88.9% of residents; Spanish is the next most common, at 8.5%.
On CaregiverConnect you deal with the caregiver yourself rather than through an agency. Write down what your mother needs (a shower twice a week, lunch on the days she skips the senior center, a ride to Providence Centralia Hospital, someone in the house overnight), the pay on offer, and the days; then message the people who answer. The cards above update as caregivers sign up and are sorted by distance from 98532, so you can see who lives close enough for an early start.

Evaluating caregivers in Chehalis
In Washington, the long-term care workers who must become certified home care aides are those paid by the state or employed by state-licensed agencies, adult family homes and assisted living facilities, apart from exempt groups such as relatives caring only for family: 75 hours of training approved by DSHS, then the DOH exam. A person your family pays directly is outside that rule, the DOH FAQ explains. So treat the credential as a bonus, not a requirement, and if a candidate has one, or is a nursing assistant, confirm it in DOH's provider credential search.
The Washington State Patrol sells a quick conviction check called WATCH, which costs $11 and shows its result immediately. Because it matches names and dates of birth instead of fingerprints, a common name needs care. Ask permission before you run it. Then phone earlier clients, ask what happened the last time a client fell or would not take a pill, and start with a paid trial morning. Nobody at CaregiverConnect checks, screens or endorses caregivers.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Do you have a reliable car, and will you take my mother to Providence Centralia Hospital and wait for her?
- Have you used DARTT or LIFTT with a client, and would you ride along on days you cannot drive?
- If Dad qualifies for Medicaid personal care or WA Cares, would you sign on with CDWA so the program pays you?
- Would you agree to a Washington State Patrol WATCH check before we begin?
- My mother lives alone. Can you call or text me after each visit with how she seemed and whether she ate?
- What do you charge for a two-hour weekday visit, and what for nights or a whole Saturday?
What in-home care costs in Chehalis: hourly rates and schedules
What Chehalis families most often need: a short weekday visit to get someone up, bathed and fed; a midday drop-in so a parent who lives alone is not alone all day; a driver for appointments and groceries, timed around DARTT's weekday hours; and some overnights during the first weeks home from hospital. While a Medicaid or WA Cares decision is pending, a privately paid caregiver can carry the load.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Western Washington nonmetropolitan area (includes Lewis County) | $22.80 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| Washington minimum wage | $17.13 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical caregiver, Washington hourly median (CareScout 2025) | $45.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are the employer. The Washington minimum wage is $17.13 an hour (effective January 1, 2026); the federal minimum of $7.25 and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. Source: US Department of Labor, direct care workers; the state source is listed at the end of this page.
BLS does not put Lewis County in a metro area: it belongs to the Western Washington nonmetropolitan area, alongside Clallam, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, Mason, Pacific, San Juan and Wahkiakum counties, while the neighboring Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater metro is Thurston County alone. Across those nine counties 4,690 home health and personal care aides worked in May 2025, earning a median of $22.80 an hour and a mean of $23.24; nursing assistants there earned a $23.16 median. Statewide the aide median was $22.95. CareScout's survey for 2025 gives a Washington agency non-medical caregiver at $45 an hour, with adult day health care at $249 daily. Washington's minimum wage is $17.13 in 2026, rising to $17.73 on January 1, 2027, and Chehalis has no separate local rate on L&I's 2026 list. Expect most private offers to sit between the regional median and the agency rate.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Chehalis: frequently asked questions
Can I get paid to take care of Mom in Chehalis?
When she is eligible for Apple Health long-term care, yes: DSHS lets relatives work as Individual Providers on the payroll of Consumer Direct Care Network Washington (CDWA). A son or daughter who becomes a family provider takes five hours of orientation and safety training before paid work then 30 more hours of basic training in the first 120 days. If she has earned WA Cares benefits instead, she can use them to pay you as a CDWA or registered-agency employee.
Who qualifies for WA Cares, which started paying in 2026?
Benefits became available on July 1, 2026. A worker who has contributed for three of the past six years can use up to $36,500; someone born before January 1, 1968 earns 10% of that for each year contributed. They must also need help with three or more daily activities, such as bathing or moving around the house, for at least 90 days. LMTAAA can help with the application in person.
Can a husband or wife be paid?
Not under Apple Health long-term care. DSHS names two exceptions: Veteran Directed Care for a qualifying veteran, and WA Cares, which allows spouses to be paid caregivers when the person receiving care has earned benefits.
How do we start a Medicaid in-home care application from Lewis County?
Apply through Washington Connection or call 877-429-7019; DSHS also lists (253) 476-7200 for Lewis County. A financial check and a care-needs assessment follow. The Area Agency on Aging office on S. Market Blvd. can help you plan and find local services before you apply.
Dad no longer drives. What rides are there?
Lewis County Transit's DARTT vans take riders door to door on weekdays for medical visits, shopping and the pharmacy; book by 4 p.m. the day before. If he cannot use a bus at all, apply for LIFTT. Medicaid members schedule medical trips through Paratransit Services, the regional broker, at (800) 846-5438.
