How to find an in-home caregiver in Garland
Garland, a city in Dallas County, had 246,844 residents in Census Bureau ACS estimates for 2020–2024; 31,085 of them were past their 65th birthday. Nearly a third of those seniors (30.6%) have a disability, and the ACS finds 4,167 Garland homes where an older woman is the only occupant (another 1,772 are older men alone). Posts here often come from working sons and daughters who need someone for mornings, doctor visits, or the first days after a hospital stay.
The registry ZIP codes for this page are 75040, 75041, 75042, 75043 and 75044. Over half of Garland residents five and up (53.1%) speak a non-English language in the home: Spanish 38.5%, Asian or Pacific Island tongues 9.4%. Within that second group, 5.5 of the 9.4 points are people who rate their English below "very well", so name your parent's first language in the post. Only 4.1% of households lack a car and 0.9% of workers use transit, so most caregivers will expect to drive. More cities are on the Texas caregivers page.

Evaluating caregivers in Garland
A family that hires on its own, without an agency, does its own vetting. HHSC keeps the Employee Misconduct Registry, a public database of unlicensed workers barred after abuse, neglect or exploitation findings; its Employability Status Check is open to any interested party, and HHSC says employers beyond its regulated providers can use it as a screening tool. Texas DPS sells name searches of its conviction database for $3.00 a credit, but warns that results may not belong to the person searched and that only fingerprints confirm identity. Phone two references, meet face to face, get a signature before ordering any report, and pay for a short trial while you are nearby. Our site leaves all screening to families and makes no attempt to validate certificates.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Can you take my mother to her primary care visits at Parkland's Garland Health Center on Hopkins Street?
- My father has dementia and gets restless toward evening; tell me how you have handled evenings like that.
- Would you accept being paid through the Texas CDS option if my father qualifies?
- Besides English, what languages are you comfortable using with my parents all day?
- Will you drive your own vehicle, or ride DART Paratransit alongside my mother?
- Could you drop her at the Carver Senior Center for lunch and collect her afterward?
- Suppose you wake up sick on a workday: how early would we hear, and who might fill in?
What in-home care costs in Garland: hourly rates and schedules
Garland families mostly ask for weekday daytime help: getting a parent washed, dressed and fed, light housekeeping, medicine reminders and a ride to appointments. Overnights are usually short stretches after a hospital discharge. The city's senior lunch program runs Monday through Friday, so a caregiver can build midday around it. Say how many hours a week you want and whether lifting or transfers are involved.

| Employed aides, Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington, TX metro (Dallas County) | $12.93 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |

| Agency non-medical caregiver, Texas median (CareScout 2025) | $30.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are the employer. The Texas minimum wage is $7.25 an hour (effective July 24, 2009); the federal minimum of $7.25 and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. Source: US Department of Labor, direct care workers; the state source is listed at the end of this page.
BLS places Dallas County in an eleven-county Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington wage area, where 58,580 aides earned a $12.93 median and a $13.68 mean in May 2025, above the $11.65 Texas median. A location quotient of 0.52 says aide jobs are only about half as common in this metro's workforce as they are nationally. For agency care, CareScout's 2025 survey gives a $30 Texas median per hour. The U.S. Labor Department lists Texas at $7.25, the federal rate the state adopts by reference. IRS Topic 756 explains when a family must withhold Social Security and Medicare taxes for a household worker; the 2026 threshold is $3,000 in cash wages.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring safely in Garland
Agree in writing on tasks, schedule, rate, overtime and pay day, and have the caregiver initial each week's hours. Since 1974 the federal wage law has reached domestic service in private households. The companionship exemption can take some care work outside minimum wage and overtime, while the live-in exemption removes only overtime; a July 2025 federal proposal would change them, so check current guidance first. Keep valuables and financial papers locked away, watch account statements, and call 1-800-252-5400 if you suspect mistreatment. The private caregiver hiring guide goes further into agreements and taxes.

Hiring a caregiver in Garland: frequently asked questions
What do Garland families pay a private caregiver?
Every caregiver on the site names an hourly rate. Two benchmarks: aides employed in the Dallas–Fort Worth area earned a $12.93 median in May 2025 (BLS), and Texas agencies billed a $30 median per hour for non-medical agency care that year (CareScout). Direct hires generally sit between those numbers.
Can my father's Medicaid pay me or my sister to care for him?
Sometimes. Texas offers the Consumer Directed Services option in STAR+PLUS, Community Attendant Services, Primary Home Care and other programs. The person served, or a legally authorized representative, employs the attendants and HHS says they can often be relatives, neighbors or friends, with limits on which relatives in some programs. A financial management services agency (FMSA) handles payroll and must approve each hire, and the hourly wage has to be at least minimum wage. The Dallas Area Agency on Aging's own caregiver support program, by contrast, is for unpaid caregivers.
How many licensed home care agencies have a Garland address?
In the HHS directory of home and community support services agencies with active licenses on October 22, 2026, 146 list a Garland address; 116 are licensed for personal assistance services, 84 for home health and 17 for hospice.
Is there dementia support for Garland families?
The Community Council of Greater Dallas runs an Alzheimer's and dementia program, funded under the state's Grants to Increase Local Dementia Support, with caregiver guidance, education and a Memory Café where people with memory loss and the family members who care for them can meet. The Dallas Area Agency on Aging's caregiver support also covers people caring for someone of any age with Alzheimer's or a related dementia.
Is the City of Garland building a new senior center?
Yes. The city's New Senior Center Project page describes a $17.5 million, 27,000-square-foot facility that includes exercise rooms and a walking track. While the old Senior Activity Center is closed, most programs meet at Fields Recreation Center.
What do I pay to use CaregiverConnect?
Nothing to post a care need, see profiles or receive applications. A Family Premium membership, $24.99 per month, is required to message caregivers and record a hire. Wages go straight from you to the caregiver with no commission taken.
