How to find an in-home caregiver in Richmond

Richmond is a city in Madison County, Kentucky, and it is growing: the Census Bureau counts 40,663 residents in its July 2025 estimate, against 35,164 at the April 2020 base. It is also young, with a median age of 28.4 in the ACS 2020–2024 profile. Residents aged 65 and over number 3,984, or 10.7%, and many need help: 47.9% of Richmond residents over 65 report a disability, two in three (66.0%) are women, and women 65 or older living alone head 1,557 households. One household in five (20.8%) includes someone aged 65 or more.

CaregiverConnect works without an agency in the middle. You post what your parent needs (morning help with bathing and dressing, company in the afternoon, rides to appointments, overnight cover), set the hours and the pay you can offer, and message the caregivers who apply. The caregiver cards above refresh whenever someone new signs up, closest to Richmond first, so a radius around 40475 shows who could reach your parent's door. Six in ten Richmond homes are rented (61.7%, ACS), so if your parent lives in an apartment, mention parking and stairs in the posting.

Two public routes run beside private hiring. Kentucky Medicaid's Home and Community Based (HCB) waiver can pay for attendant care, and its Participant Directed Services option lets your parent hire their own workers. The Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living, which covers Madison and 16 other counties, runs the regional intake for state Homecare, family caregiver support and dementia services.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Richmond

The checking is yours when you hire directly, and Kentucky gives you a free tool for it: the Caregiver Misconduct Registry. The Department for Community Based Services says anyone can search it free, at any hour, for a validated, substantiated finding of adult abuse, neglect or exploitation made on or after July 15, 2014, and that it covers people seeking work in a direct caregiving role in a private setting. Search the caregiver's name before you hire. If they say they are a nurse aide, Kentucky Medicaid keeps the nurse aide registry with the Kentucky Board of Nursing; the state's definition of a nurse aide leaves out people a family hires to sit with someone without doing nursing tasks, so a companion-type caregiver will not be listed and does not need to be.

After the registry search, hold the interview in your parent's own home, with your parent asking questions too. Call two previous families, ask what the caregiver did when an earlier client fell or refused a pill, and pay for a short trial before a long arrangement. A consumer reporting agency can run a criminal record search once the caregiver signs a consent form. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens or checks caregivers.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Will you let me search your name on the Kentucky Caregiver Misconduct Registry before we agree anything?
  • Have you worked as a Participant Directed Services employee under the HCB waiver, and are you comfortable with the timesheets a financial management agency asks for?
  • Can you take my father to appointments at Baptist Health Richmond on the Eastern Bypass and wait with him?
  • My mother lives alone in an upstairs apartment. Are you able to help her safely on the stairs?
  • Tell me about a client with dementia. What worked on the evenings they were restless?
  • What do you charge for companionship, and how much more for bathing, toileting or overnight shifts?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Richmond: hourly rates and schedules

Typical Richmond requests are a two- or three-hour morning visit to help a parent get up, wash, dress and take medication; afternoons of companionship and light housekeeping for someone who should not be alone all day; a driver and companion for medical appointments; and overnight or weekend cover so a son or daughter with a job can sleep or travel. If your parent is on the HCB waiting list, a private caregiver can bridge the months until a slot opens.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are the employer. The Kentucky minimum wage is $7.25 an hour (effective July 1, 2009); the federal minimum of $7.25 and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. BLS places Madison County in the Central Kentucky nonmetropolitan area, not the Lexington-Fayette metro, whose six counties are Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Jessamine, Scott and Woodford. That 24-county nonmetro area counts 2,410 people working as home health and personal care aides; their median is $17.63 and their mean $17.66; the Kentucky median is $17.52. CareScout's 2025 survey puts a Kentucky agency non-medical caregiver at $33 an hour, $6,197 a month at 44 hours a week, and adult day health care at $88 a day. The state minimum wage is $7.25, effective July 1, 2009, with time and a half after 40 hours in a week; the U.S. Department of Labor adds that Kentucky also has a separate seventh-day overtime rule. Most private rates land between the aide median and the agency figure.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Richmond

Write the arrangement down: schedule, hourly rate, the care tasks included, how shopping and pharmacy money is handled, and the notice period for ending it. Keep a weekly timesheet you both sign, lock up medication, checks and cards, and turn on account alerts. Kentucky law requires any person with reasonable cause to suspect abuse, neglect or exploitation of an adult to report it; call (877) 597-2331 or 911 in an emergency. On wages and taxes, the hiring guide explains household-employer duties; the U.S. Department of Labor says most direct care workers are owed federal minimum wage and overtime, and federal overtime does not apply to a caregiver who lives in the household, though the minimum wage still does.

How it works

How to hire a private caregiver in Richmond (no agency)

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Richmond: frequently asked questions

Can Kentucky Medicaid pay my sister to look after Dad in Richmond?

Under the HCB waiver's Participant Directed Services option, CHFS says a participant may hire friends, neighbors, some provider agencies and certain family members. Employees must be at least 18 and pass a criminal background check, and a financial management agency pays them from submitted timesheets. A PDS case manager, found through an Area Agency on Aging or a Community Mental Health Center, helps set it up.

Is there a wait for the HCB waiver?

Yes. CHFS says there is currently a waiting list and that your place is set by the date your completed application is received, so apply early. The Bluegrass ADRC can help with the application, and a private caregiver can cover the time in between.

Mom is not on Medicaid. What can the Area Agency on Aging do?

Kentucky's Homecare program, in place since 1982, serves frail people 60 and older after an in-home assessment, with help such as bathing, meal preparation, housekeeping and respite, and fees on a sliding scale. The family caregiver support program has no income limit. Both start with a call to the Bluegrass ADRC.

How much will a private caregiver cost here?

Every caregiver posts an hourly rate on their profile. The Central Kentucky aide median of $17.63 and CareScout's $33 Kentucky agency rate are useful reference points; personal care, nights and weekends usually cost more than companionship.

Who drives my father to dialysis if he is on Medicaid?

Kentucky's non-emergency medical transportation program covers rides to Medicaid services when no free, suitable transport is available. In Madison County you book through Federated Transportation Services of the Bluegrass at least 72 hours ahead. A private caregiver can also drive if you agree mileage.
