Posted rates come from live caregiver profiles. The aide wage is the BLS figure for employed home health and personal care aides in Alaska, a benchmark rather than a private rate.

Private caregivers provide non-medical help at home: companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands and rides, bathing, dressing and toileting, mobility help, medication reminders, respite for family caregivers, and overnight or live-in care. Skilled nursing, such as injections or wound care, needs a licensed home health agency.
Caregivers within 25 miles of Farm Loop list an average of $24.90 an hour on their CaregiverConnect profiles (21 profiles, October 2026). Home health and personal care aides in Alaska earn a median $19.11 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Agencies bill families more than that to cover their costs. When you hire directly you agree the rate with the caregiver, and CaregiverConnect takes no commission.
A certified nursing assistant (CNA) has passed a state-approved training program and competency exam and is listed on the state nurse aide registry. Federal rules require at least 75 hours of training for nursing home aides. A home health aide (HHA) working for a Medicare-certified home health agency must also meet a federal 75-hour training or competency standard. Both can help with personal care. Neither does skilled nursing. Rules for private, non-medical caregivers vary by state.
Write down the tasks and hours you need, then interview more than one caregiver. Ask about experience with similar needs (dementia, transfers, diabetes), call at least two references, verify identity and any certifications, and consider a paid trial shift. Put duties, hours, pay and notice in a written agreement. Our hiring guide has a checklist.
Involve the older adult from the start and ask what matters most to them. Agree who in the family coordinates, what the budget is and who pays. Medicare does not pay for long-term custodial care at home. Medicaid home care programs, veterans' benefits and long-term care insurance may. Revisit the plan as needs change. The Medicaid programs guide explains the options.
What a private in-home caregiver costs compared with an agency, how to screen and check references, the household-employer tax and overtime rules in California and Arizona, and what to put in writing.
What in-home care services cover, how non-medical home care differs from Medicare home health, who provides care in California (licensed organizations, home health agencies, IHSS, private caregivers) and the questions to ask before you choose.
How Medicaid pays relatives through self-directed and consumer-directed care, structured family caregiving, the spouse and parent rules, a sourced table for 12 states, VA alternatives and how to apply.
