Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Greene County

Greene County covers 624 square miles of Northeast Tennessee, according to the county government, and borders Hawkins County to the north, Hamblen and Cocke to the west, Washington and Unicoi to the east and Madison County, North Carolina, to the south. About 60 square miles in the south of the county are part of the Cherokee National Forest. Greeneville is the county seat. The Census Bureau estimated 73,831 residents in July 2025; 51,258 of them lived outside the four incorporated places of Greeneville, Tusculum, Mosheim and Baileyton. For a caregiver, that means many clients live on rural roads with a ZIP code rather than a town name, and most of the hiring institutions are in Greeneville.

Searching here works best with a radius rather than a single town. Set one wide enough to reach the town where you would accept work, put both "caregiver" and "sitter" in the profile text, and state plainly whether your own car is available for a client's appointments. Greene borders Hamblen and Hawkins counties, so towns there such as Morristown and Bulls Gap may fall inside your radius; Newport in Cocke County and Rogersville are the other neighboring town pages.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Greene County

Across the county, private work for an older adult can be daytime sitting and meals, personal care in the morning or evening, overnight cover, a weekly few hours of respite for a spouse, or help after a hospital stay in Greeneville. Agency and facility jobs add a second route: home health agencies, four nursing homes and the hospital all employ aides. You can apply for private, non-medical work without a certificate.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Greene County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the East Tennessee nonmetropolitan area (includes Greene County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, East Tennessee nonmetropolitan area (includes Greene County)$16.28 median ($16.25 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 1,460 jobs; concentration 0.37× national
TennCare CHOICES, 2026 monthly income limit for applicants$2,982TennCare CHOICES page; countable assets up to $2,000
Federal (Tennessee has no state minimum) minimum wage$7.25effective July 24, 2009
Nursing assistants, East Tennessee nonmetropolitan area (includes Greene County)$17.54 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer. Tennessee has no state minimum wage law, so the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour is the legal floor, and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. Sources: US Department of Labor, state minimum wage laws; US Department of Labor, direct care workers.

Greene County is not part of any metro area in the BLS wage survey. It is one of ten counties, with Cocke, Sevier, McMinn and others, in the East Tennessee nonmetropolitan area, where 1,460 home health and personal care aides were paid a $16.28 median in May 2025 and nursing assistants $17.54. For comparison, the Tennessee aide median was $15.45 and the Kingsport–Bristol metro, which includes Hawkins County, $14.31. The CHOICES income limit in the table matters because it decides which older residents can get home care paid by TennCare rather than by the family.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in Tennessee, applied to Greene County

No Tennessee minimum wage exists, so the U.S. Department of Labor applies the federal $7.25 to covered work in Greene County. Household caregivers fall under the federal domestic service rules, with exemptions for companionship and for live-in workers that agencies, as third-party employers, cannot use under the 2013 rule; the Department proposed revising this in July 2025. For a nursing assistant certificate you complete an approved training program, pass the state competency exam within 24 months and renew every two years; the registry and testing vendor named by the Health Facilities Commission is Credentia from June 1, 2026. Reports to Adult Protective Services go to 1-888-277-8366, staffed around the clock, or to the One DHS online portal.
