Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Morristown

Morristown is an incorporated city in Hamblen County, Tennessee. Census Bureau estimates for 2020–2024 (ACS) put the population at 31,527; 16.4% are 65 or older, and 49.7% of those older residents report a disability. On CaregiverConnect, families post the job, set the hours and pay, and talk to you directly; there is no agency between you. This group of Tennessee pages covers a handful of small towns around Mohawk, so the setting that matters most is your travel radius. Mohawk, in Greene County, is about 10 straight-line miles from Morristown by ZIP centroid, and Bulls Gap and Rogersville in Hawkins County are part of the same small group of pages; a radius of 15 to 20 miles lets the live list above show jobs in those towns next to jobs in the city.

Spanish is a real asset here. The ACS finds Spanish spoken at home by 19.8% of Morristown residents five or older, and 10.9% of residents speak Spanish and rate their own English below very good. A Spanish-speaking caregiver should say so at the top of the profile.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer. Tennessee has no state minimum wage law, so the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour is the legal floor, and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. Sources: US Department of Labor, state minimum wage laws; US Department of Labor, direct care workers.

BLS publishes a separate metro series for Morristown that covers Hamblen and Jefferson counties only. In May 2025 it counted 470 employed home health and personal care aides there, with a median of $14.44 an hour, below the Tennessee median of $15.45 and below the $16.28 BLS reports for the ten-county East Tennessee nonmetropolitan area that takes in Greene and Cocke counties. Its concentration figure of 0.36 means about a third as many aide jobs per worker as the national average. Nursing assistants in the metro earned a median of $18.09. With no state minimum wage, the federal $7.25 is the legal floor for covered work; private rates are whatever you and a family agree.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in Tennessee, applied to Morristown

Tennessee does not license a sitter or companion whom a Morristown family hires directly, and no state page we read requires a background check for that kind of private arrangement. Licensing applies to employers: home health agencies, and personal support services agencies, which the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services licenses and reviews by desk audit. To become a certified nurse aide you complete an approved course and pass the state exam within 24 months of it; the registry is now run for the Health Facilities Commission by Credentia, and renewal every two years needs eight hours of work in a licensed or certified facility. Private duty, sitter and companion work does not count toward that renewal. Under federal law, a household that employs you directly owes at least $7.25 an hour unless the job fits the companionship exemption; a caregiver living in the household can lose overtime protection while keeping the minimum wage. Tennessee Adult Protective Services answers its 24-hour hotline, 1-888-APS-TENN, for any worry about mistreatment of an older or disabled adult.

Under Consumer Direction the member becomes the employer and may hire family members, friends or neighbors, with some limits; payroll goes through Consumer Direct Care Network Tennessee (CDTN). Anyone not yet enrolled in TennCare applies with help from the regional aging office, reached on 1-866-836-6678.

It funds meals, homemaker and personal care services, the family caregiver support program, Options for Community Living and Medicare counseling. Call 1-866-836-6678.

Inside the city, Lakeway Transit runs three weekday routes for $1.50 a ride. Beyond them, ETHRA Public Transit offers door-to-door rides for $3.00 if you book three business days ahead.

Will sitter work keep my nurse aide certificate active?

No. For the two-year renewal, Tennessee wants proof of at least eight paid hours at a licensed or certified health care facility; hours spent sitting with or caring for a private client are excluded.
