Planning home help for an aging parent in Amsterdam or elsewhere in Montgomery County: list the tasks and hours, see who lives closest, then settle the rate and routine directly with the caregiver you choose.

The City of Amsterdam's own website opens with views of the pedestrian bridge over the Mohawk River and Lock E-11 on the Erie Canal. The Census Bureau estimated 18,093 residents on July 1, 2025, slightly fewer than its April 2020 base of 18,214. Census survey data for 2020–2024 count 3,550 people in the city are 65 or older (19.5%), 357 of them at least 85, and 32.4% of the 7,679 households include an older adult. Among residents 65 and up, 40.2% report a disability. Older people living alone head 672 households (women) and 580 (men).
Language and transport shape the search here. Of residents age five and over, 18.2% use a home language besides English, mainly Spanish (15.8%), and the survey counts 939 Spanish speakers who speak English less than "very well"; about a quarter of the city (26.9%) is of Puerto Rican origin. Note in the posting if Spanish suits your parent best. About one household in seven (14.5%) has no vehicle, more than the county's 11.4%, so say whether the job includes driving. All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

Nobody at CaregiverConnect checks identities, licenses or criminal records, so each reply is a starting point for your own checking. Interview at your parent's place and include your parent. Ask for two past families or supervisors and phone them yourself, pose a scenario such as a missed insulin dose, then pay for a single trial shift before committing. New York's Labor Department points out that the Department of Health criminal history check is normally run by an agency; a family hiring someone directly has no access to it.
Montgomery County sits in what the Labor Department calls the remainder of New York State, where the basic minimum wage is $16.00 an hour in 2026. Under Public Health Law §3614-f, anyone employed mainly to help someone at home with personal care, chores or health tasks, CDPAP personal assistants included, gets a higher floor: $18.65 here in 2026. That floor excludes people working on a casual basis. Aides can also be owed overtime at 1½ times their rate past 40 hours (44 if living in), call-in pay when sent home early from a scheduled shift, and an extra hour at the minimum rate for a workday that stretches beyond ten hours.
Common requests are set weekly blocks: mornings for washing and dressing, a midday lunch and medication check, afternoons for errands, or nights and weekends so a relative can rest. Paid private shifts fill gaps until EISEP or Medicaid help starts.

| New York (remainder of state) minimum wage | $16.00 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are the employer. The New York (remainder of state) minimum wage is $16.00 an hour (effective January 1, 2026); the federal minimum of $7.25 and federal overtime rules apply to directly employed caregivers unless the work is exempt companionship under the FLSA. BLS does not count Montgomery County in the Albany metro. It belongs to the Capital/Northern New York nonmetropolitan area, eight counties that also include Fulton, Hamilton, Essex, Clinton, Franklin, St. Lawrence and Lewis. There, 5,110 home health and personal care aides (SOC 31-1120) earned a median $18.28 an hour and a mean of $19.60 ($40,760 a year) in May 2025, below New York's $19.05; the area's nursing assistants were at $21.17. Those figures came before January 2026, when the home care aide minimum for this region went from $18.10 to $18.65; the next step is $19.00 in January 2027. CareScout's 2025 survey lists a $35 hourly median for New York agency non-medical care, or $80,080 a year full time, and a semi-private nursing home room costs a median $511 a day.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
Put the hours, rates, duties and the routine for shopping money and receipts in a short written agreement you both sign, and keep a weekly record of hours worked. Secure valuables and medicines, and turn on banking alerts for unusual withdrawals. To report an older Montgomery County resident at risk of neglect, harm or exploitation, call Protective Services for Adults at 518-853-8275. As a household employer, the Labor Department expects you to give written notice of the pay rate, overtime rate and payday, pay weekly with a written statement, allow at least 30 unpaid minutes for a meal in a shift over six hours, and buy workers' compensation if the caregiver works 40 hours a week or lives in. An employer of four or fewer must also give up to 40 hours of sick leave a year, paid if the employer's net income topped $1 million. Under federal law a live-in caregiver can be exempt from overtime, never from the minimum wage. Read our CDPAP guide if a relative may be paid.

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.
Browsing, posting and receiving applications are free. Messaging and confirming a hire are part of Family Premium ($24.99/month, cancel any time). No commission on what you pay the caregiver; see the pricing page.
Caregivers set a travel radius, so a caregiver based in a neighbouring town may well cover your home. These pages show who is nearby.
Yes, if she qualifies for Medicaid home care and chooses CDPAP. A CDPAP consumer may hire a relative or friend; the health department rules out only a spouse, the person acting as designated representative, and a parent when the consumer is younger than 21. She (or her representative) recruits, trains and supervises you and keeps payroll records; PPL, which every CDPAP consumer must now use, processes your wages and withholding. Assessments since September 1, 2025 apply the Minimum Needs Requirements to adults 21 or older, though anyone already authorized then stays under the prior rules.
With the Department of Social Services' Long Term Care Unit, 518-853-8275. It handles home care and long-term care for people who are Medicaid eligible, at any age.
Call the Office for Aging at 518-843-2300 about EISEP, the state program for people 60 and over who need help with personal care or chores and are not Medicaid-eligible. Locally it covers bathing, dressing, shopping, laundry and cleaning, and what you pay depends on monthly income.
A caregiver hired mainly for personal care at home must legally get at least $18.65 an hour here in 2026, and $19.00 in 2027. Aides in the BLS area covering Montgomery County had a median of $18.28 in May 2025, before the latest increase; CareScout puts New York agency rates at a $35 median. A directly hired caregiver is owed overtime past 40 hours a week, or 44 when living in.
