How to find an in-home caregiver in Burney
In Burney, the person needing care is often already retired and so, quite often, is the relative organizing it. ACS 2020–2024 counts 915 residents aged 65 or older, more than a third of this census-designated place, including 83 who are 85 or older. More than half of all households (590 of 1,119) have an older member, and 190 older residents live by themselves. Four in ten residents over 65 report a disability. For many families the realistic plan is a combination: a few hours of paid help at home, IHSS hours if the parent qualifies, and a backup for the days when the family cannot be there.
Because Burney is small and far from Redding, the caregivers who answer are most likely to live in town or elsewhere in the intermountain area. A post works best when it is concrete. Name the tasks (a shower, lunch, medicines, a drive to the clinic on Enterprise Drive or to Fall River Mills), the days and hours, whether the house has steps, and the pay. Offer longer shifts or a set weekly pattern if you can; a caregiver driving in from farther away will weigh the trip. The requests and profiles on this page change as families and caregivers sign up.

Evaluating caregivers in Burney
Ask each applicant what they can show you. A Shasta County IHSS provider has completed the county orientation and a state background check. A caregiver sent by a licensed home care agency must appear on the Home Care Aide Registry, which you can search online. A certified nursing assistant, such as someone who has worked in the Mayers skilled nursing unit, can be looked up on CDPH's certificate verification site. Plenty of capable people in a town this size have none of these and learned by caring for their own relatives, which is fine if you check them well: call two references, ask how they handled a fall or a confused evening, and pay for a trial shift while a family member is present. CaregiverConnect does not run background checks or verify anyone's identity or credentials; with the caregiver's written consent you can order a check yourself.

What in-home care costs in Burney: hourly rates and schedules
Midday visits. Two to four hours for lunch, a shower, laundry and housework. Clinic days. A longer block when an appointment is in Fall River Mills or Redding. Respite for a spouse. A set afternoon or two each week so a husband or wife who provides most of the care can rest or run errands. Overnights. Requested after a hospital discharge or when memory loss makes nights unsafe.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Redding metro (Shasta County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Shasta County | $18.50 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Start with IHSS if your parent has Medi-Cal. Two-thirds of Burney residents (66.1%) have public health coverage in ACS 2020–2024, and Shasta County says an approved IHSS client may have a family member or friend enroll as the caregiver, paid $18.50 an hour. For private hours, you become the employer. No Shasta County community has a local wage ordinance in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory, so the floor is California's $16.90, and a personal attendant is owed time and a half for any hours past nine a day or past 45 a week. CareScout's 2025 California median for agency non-medical care is $40 an hour, but the CDSS licensing file shows no home care organization based in Burney, so most families here hire directly. The median household income in Burney is $65,969.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
