How to find an in-home caregiver in Shasta County

Distance is the first thing to plan for. Most of the county's population, and most caregivers, live along Interstate 5 between Anderson, Redding and Shasta Lake, where visits between towns are a short freeway trip. Outside that corridor, 66,395 people live in unincorporated places, from Cottonwood and Happy Valley in the south to Palo Cedro, Millville and the intermountain towns of Burney and Fall River Mills. A request for one of those addresses gets more replies when it offers mileage, a longer shift or a set weekly schedule that makes the trip worthwhile.

Write the post around your relative, not a job title. Say what help is needed (bathing, meals, rides to Mercy or Shasta Regional, overnight supervision), when, and anything a stranger should know before arriving: stairs, pets, a gravel road, a gate code. English is spoken at home by 92.2% of residents five and older, so name another language only if your parent needs it. Below, profiles run from nearest to farthest from whatever ZIP code you enter, with newcomers appearing once they register.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Shasta County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Shasta County

Check what an applicant can prove. Shasta County IHSS providers have attended the county orientation, cleared a state background check and signed a rights and responsibilities agreement; the Public Authority adds them to its registry only after that enrollment. Licensed agencies may only send aides listed on California's Home Care Aide Registry, whereas independents decide for themselves whether to list. Nursing assistants hold a CDPH certificate, and Shasta College in Redding runs the local course. Beyond paperwork, call two recent employers, introduce the applicant to your parent, and book one paid trial shift first. CaregiverConnect itself checks nobody's background, license or references; if you want a screening report, that choice is yours and requires the caregiver's signed consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live, and could you still reach us in snow or wildfire smoke?
  • Have you cared for anyone recently discharged from Mercy or Shasta Regional?
  • Are you an enrolled Shasta County IHSS provider, and would you join the Public Authority registry?
  • Could you take Dad to the adult day program on Mercy Drive and collect him afterward?
  • Are you comfortable with a walker, shower chair or transfers from a wheelchair?
  • If we lose power during fire season, what would you do first?
  • Which days could you commit to every week for at least three months?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Four reference points help with in home care cost here. The state minimum is $16.90; no Shasta County city has its own higher rate in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory. Across the Redding metro, aides were paid a $16.50 median in May 2025. The county's IHSS providers get $18.50 hourly under the rate that took effect on January 1, 2026, while CareScout's 2025 survey sets California agency non-medical care at a $40 median. A private wage near that county figure competes well for the same caregivers. The state Domestic Worker Bill of Rights sets time-and-a-half pay for personal attendants once daily hours exceed nine or weekly hours exceed 45. Before budgeting private hours for a relative with Medi-Cal, ask IHSS about coverage on (530) 225-5507.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Shasta County: frequently asked questions

How does my mother apply for IHSS in Shasta County?

Call (530) 225-5507 or download the application from the county IHSS page. Eligibility rests on age 60-plus, blindness or disability, Medi-Cal coverage, low income and needing help to remain safely in her own rented or owned home. A social worker meets with her to decide eligibility, and a health care certification form is part of the application.

Is there adult day care in Shasta County?

Dignity Health Connected Living in Redding runs day programs for older adults, one of them adult day health care; call 530-223-6034. The PSA 2 Area Agency on Aging, (800) 510-2020, can point you to respite and caregiver support elsewhere in the county.

How much does home care cost in Shasta County?

Private caregivers usually price against the $18.50 IHSS rate and the $16.90 state minimum, while CareScout reports a $40 hourly median for agency care in California. Overtime pay is due for time beyond nine hours daily or 45 weekly.

My father has stopped driving. What rides exist?

Inside Redding, Anderson and Shasta Lake, RABA buses and Runabout vans run, and RABA Response serves riders who cannot use the bus. In rural areas, ShastaConnect provides weekday door-to-door rides; book on (530) 226-3075.

Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers?

No. Checking backgrounds, licenses and references is up to you, because the platform does none of it. A post costs nothing; Family Premium, $24.99 monthly, is the plan for messaging and hire confirmation.

Will anyone travel to Burney or Fall River Mills?

Use her exact ZIP code so caregivers in the intermountain area see it, and offer mileage or longer shifts. Families there often find that two or three long days a week fill faster than daily short visits.
