How to find an in-home caregiver in Butte County
Distance comes first. Most of the county's people live in Chico and Oroville, which B-Line Route 20 connects, so a caregiver in either city can usually cover the other. Requests from Paradise, Magalia, Forest Ranch or the farm roads around Gridley ask more of a caregiver, and offering mileage, or fewer but longer shifts, helps such posts get answers. Write the town, the nearest cross street and whether a car is needed for errands into the request.
Language belongs in the post as well. In the ACS 2020–2024, one county resident in six aged five or over (16.6%) speaks something other than English at home; for 10.8% it is Spanish. Butte County is also home to a Hmong community of about 5,055 people by the same survey (table B02015), most of them in Oroville and Chico; if a grandparent speaks Hmong, say so at the top. The caregiver list lower on this page starts with whoever lives nearest your ZIP code, and it grows as people sign up.

Types of in-home care families in Butte County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Butte County
Find out which records an applicant can show you. An IHSS provider in Butte County has completed the Public Authority enrollment: an orientation, DOJ fingerprints taken by Live Scan, and a face-to-face check of original ID and Social Security card. The state registry of home care aides is mandatory for agency staff and voluntary for everyone else. CNAs hold a CDPH certificate, and Butte College runs a course for them. Then phone two references, let your parent join the conversation, and pay for a first trial day. The platform itself does not check backgrounds, licenses or references; that remains your job, and a background report needs the applicant's written consent, given in advance.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where do you live, and how many minutes is it from here?
- Has any past client of yours come home from Enloe or Oroville Hospital?
- Did you complete IHSS enrollment with the Butte County Public Authority?
- Can you drive my father up to Paradise or down to Chico for appointments?
- My grandmother speaks Hmong. Do you speak it, or have you worked with a Hmong family?
- What would you do if a fire evacuation warning came while you were with her?
- Would you drop her at the Peg Taylor Center and collect her afterward?
What in-home care costs in Butte County: hourly rates and schedules
Chico. Short weekday visits and help when a parent has no adult day session. Oroville and Thermalito. Longer daytime blocks, often paired with a family member's work shift. The Ridge and the south county. Fewer, longer shifts or live-in arrangements, to save a daily drive up the hill or out to Gridley.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Chico metro (Butte County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Butte County | $17.90 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Four reference points help when setting a private rate: California's $16.90 minimum, which applies everywhere in Butte County because no city here sets its own; the BLS figure of $16.50 for Chico-metro aides (May 2025); the $17.90 IHSS rate for county providers; and CareScout's $40 California median for an agency hour. A direct hire therefore usually costs well under agency rates, but the household becomes the employer. Overtime for a personal attendant, set by California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, kicks in for the tenth hour of a workday and for hour 46 of a week. For a relative with Medi-Cal, call IHSS intake at 530-552-6161 before you commit to paying privately; Passages' MSSP may also cover services for frail Medi-Cal members 60 and older.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
