How to find an in-home caregiver in Paradise

Start with where the care happens and how your parent gets around. The Ridge is spread out, Sunday transit is thin and many households are a single older adult: the ACS 2020–2024 counts people 65 and over in 59.8% of Paradise households, and roughly one household in five is an older person living alone. A post that gives the ZIP code (95969), the nearest cross street on Skyway, Clark Road or Pentz Road, and whether the caregiver will be driving your parent gets read by the right people sooner.

Applicants are likely to come from three places: neighbors already living in Paradise or Magalia, caregivers in Chico who drive up, and relatives who can be paid through IHSS. The town is still rebuilding after the 2018 Camp Fire, which CAL FIRE says destroyed 18,804 structures, and a caregiver driving up from the valley will weigh the trip against the hours, so be clear about shift length; fewer, longer visits make the drive worth it. Your request stays listed after you post it, so caregivers who sign up later can still find it.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Paradise

Private home care has no single license, so match the check to the person. Agency staff appear on the CDSS Home Care Aide Registry, and some independents list themselves voluntarily; the online lookup asks for a first name, last name and PER ID. Anyone already paid by Butte County IHSS has been fingerprinted and has completed the Public Authority orientation in Oroville. Nursing assistants hold a CDPH certificate you can ask to see. Beyond paperwork, phone at least two earlier clients, hold the interview in your parent's home, where the steps, the slope of the drive and the bathroom layout are visible, and book one or two paid trial days. A consumer background report needs the applicant's signed consent. CaregiverConnect itself runs no screening.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • If an evacuation order came during your shift, how would you get my father out, and do you have a car that can take his walker?
  • Do you live on the Ridge or in Chico, and how would snow or road work on Skyway change your arrival time?
  • Could you take him to the Feather River Health Center for labs and imaging, and keep track of his appointments?
  • Have you cared for someone who lives alone and resists help, and how did you handle it?
  • Would you help him sign up for Smart911 alerts and keep his go-bag packed?
  • Has Butte County already enrolled you as an IHSS provider, and if not, would you start the process?
  • What do you charge for a weekday block, and what for a night after a hospital discharge?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Paradise: hourly rates and schedules

Ridge requests tend to ask for a few weekday hours at a stretch, two or three long days a week instead of daily short visits, overnight cover for a week or two after a valley hospital stay, and weekend relief for an adult child who works in Chico. Live-in care comes up when a parent has moved back into a new house and the family lives out of the area.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Check IHSS first if your parent is on Medi-Cal. A Butte County social worker decides how many hours are needed, and the program then pays $17.90 an hour to whoever your parent names, including you, a sibling or a neighbor. Paying someone yourself costs at least the $16.90 state minimum, since Paradise has no wage ordinance of its own; licensed agencies in California charge a median of $40. Offer more for driving, overnights and the climb from the valley. About 10.9% of the town's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates (Butte County 6.1%), so local people looking for steady paid work may answer a well-described post.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Paradise

Put hours, duties, pay, overtime and notice in a signed page, and log each week's hours. California treats a home caregiver as a personal attendant, owed time-and-a-half beyond 9 hours in one day or 45 across the week (DIR). Keep checkbooks and cards out of reach and add a second family member to bank alerts. In Paradise, put the evacuation plan in the agreement too: who drives, where the go-bag is, and which phone gets the alert. Report suspected abuse to Butte County APS on 800-664-9774. The hiring guide covers payroll and agreements.
