How to find an in-home caregiver in Magalia

Magalia is an unincorporated part of Butte County, a census-designated place of 7,389 residents in ACS 2020–2024. More than one resident in five (22.9%) is 65 or older, and 406 older people live on their own, more than half of them women. ACS finds a disability among 36.5% of residents 65 and over. Many families here are looking after a parent who wants to stay in a house they have owned for years: 83.2% of homes are owner-occupied. A clear post helps: list the tasks (meals, laundry, bathing, medication reminders, driving), the days, and whether anyone else in the family lives close by.

A caregiver who answers may be coming from Paradise or Chico, so give the practical details. Mention parking, steps or a steep driveway, pets, and whether the caregiver will drive your relative's car. If the caregiver does not drive, B-Line FLEX and Route 41 connect at Lakeridge Circle. English is the home language for most residents; ACS counts 8.4% speaking another language at home. The caregiver list below starts with people closest to your ZIP and grows as more join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Magalia

Ask each applicant for proof of what they claim and check it. CDPH can confirm a CNA certificate. A Butte County IHSS provider has gone through Public Authority enrollment, including a state orientation, a Department of Justice fingerprint check and an in-person identity check with an original Social Security card. Only agency staff must be on the Home Care Aide Registry, and no licensed home care agency has a Magalia address in the 2025 CDSS files, so most applicants will be independent. Talk to two recent references, ask how the caregiver handled an emergency, and book a paid trial visit while you or a neighbor is in the house. CaregiverConnect runs no identity, record or reference checks; arrange a background check yourself with the applicant's signed consent if you want one.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live, and how long is your drive to Magalia?
  • Are you comfortable driving my mother to Ampla Health on Lakeridge or to appointments in Chico?
  • Have you worked with someone on blood thinners or with diabetes, and how did you track medicines?
  • How would you handle it if my father fell while you were with him?
  • Have you already enrolled as an IHSS provider with the Butte County Public Authority?

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Magalia: hourly rates and schedules

Weekday mornings. Help getting up, bathing and breakfast, a few days a week. Appointment days. A longer block to drive to a clinic and wait; Ampla Health Magalia Medical is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fewer, longer shifts. If the caregiver lives in another town, a four- to six-hour visit makes the trip worthwhile in a way a short daily drop-in may not. Live-in or overnight. Considered after a hospital stay or when a spouse can no longer manage nights alone.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The UC Berkeley Labor Center lists no local wage ordinance for Magalia, so California's $16.90 minimum is the floor for a caregiver you employ directly, and the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights requires overtime when a personal attendant's day goes over 9 hours or the week over 45. Butte County IHSS pays $17.90 an hour, the BLS May 2025 median for home health and personal care aides across the Chico metro was $16.50, and CareScout's California median for agency care is $40 an hour. Travel time is a real cost on the Ridge: offering mileage, or a slightly higher rate for short visits, makes a post more attractive. With a median household income of $56,920 in ACS and half of households on Social Security, check IHSS before committing to many private hours; it requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
