How to find an in-home caregiver in Chico

Chico is small enough that distance rarely rules anyone out. The average resident's commute is under 18 minutes (ACS 2020–2024), and the caregivers most likely to answer a Chico post live in town or in nearby Durham, Oroville and Paradise. A large student population also means applicants who can only work certain hours, so be exact about the schedule: the days, the start time, and whether you need someone for a whole semester or longer.

Describe the person, not just the tasks. If your father is recovering from a stay at Enloe Health, say what he can do on his own and what he cannot. Should your mother prefer Spanish, which 11.6% of Chico residents five and older use at home, or in Hmong (ACS table B02015 counts 1,372 Hmong residents in Chico), put that in the first line. Further down, you will see caregiver profiles listed closest-first to your ZIP code; more appear as people register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Chico

Ask each candidate what they can prove. Butte County IHSS providers have been through Public Authority enrollment with a Live Scan fingerprint check and an orientation; registry members were also screened before referral. A licensed home care organization may only send aides who appear on California's registry for home care aides. A CNA holds a CDPH certificate, often earned through the Butte College program. After that, ring two recent employers, invite your parent into the interview, and try one paid, supervised shift first. No background, identity or license checks are run by CaregiverConnect; if you order a background report, get the caregiver's signed consent first.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Have you helped someone home from Enloe Health or the Enloe Rehabilitation Center?
  • What is your class or work schedule this semester, and could it change?
  • Can you drive Mom to appointments around the Esplanade and wait with her?
  • Has a past client of yours had dementia and gone to an adult day program?
  • Do you speak Spanish or Hmong, and would you be comfortable speaking it with Dad?
  • If smoke from a wildfire made the air unsafe, what would you do to keep him well indoors?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

In-home care cost in Chico depends mostly on whether you hire directly or through an agency. CareScout's California median for an agency hour is $40. A direct hire is paid by you, with $16.90 as the legal minimum (Chico has no local ordinance), the BLS median for aides in the Chico metro at $16.50, and the Butte County IHSS rate at $17.90. Hiring directly makes you the employer, so time beyond nine hours daily or 45 weekly is paid at 1.5 times the rate, and you handle payroll taxes. If your parent has Medi-Cal, ask IHSS (530-552-6161) whether some hours could be paid by the program.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Does CaregiverConnect check the caregivers who apply?

No; the platform does no vetting of any kind. It is free to post a Chico request, and messaging and hire confirmation need Family Premium at $24.99 monthly.
