How to find an in-home caregiver in Corning

Corning is a city of 8,179, the state's count for January 2026, and its older residents are a small share of a young town: 822 people 65 or older in the 2020–2024 census survey, roughly a tenth of the town. Applicants may live in Corning itself, elsewhere in Tehama County, or in Red Bluff, which TRAX links to Corning on weekdays. Since 76.0% of local workers drive alone, assume the caregiver comes by car, and say in the post whether you also need trips to a clinic or to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff.

Language matters more here than almost anywhere in the county. Spanish is the home language of 53.2% of residents over four, and 26.1% of all residents were born abroad. When a grandmother thinks and talks in Spanish, write the post in both languages, and ask whether the caregiver can also follow English instructions from her doctor or pharmacy. The list of caregivers on this page shows the profiles closest to your ZIP first and expands as more people join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Corning

Ask every applicant to show what they hold. A Tehama County IHSS provider has finished the Public Authority's enrollment, which includes an in-person orientation and a Department of Justice Live Scan. Nurse assistants hold a CDPH certificate, which you can verify online. Workers placed by a licensed home care agency are required to appear on the state's Home Care Aide Registry; for independent caregivers it is voluntary. Then check for yourself: speak with two people the applicant has worked for, introduce them to your parent in your own home, and pay for one trial day before settling on regular hours. Nobody's identity, training or record is confirmed by CaregiverConnect, so a background report is for you to arrange with the applicant's written consent.

  • Have you worked in Corning before, perhaps at Olive City Care Home, Pleasant Place or for an IHSS client?
  • Could you take Mom to her Solano Street clinic, and to St. Elizabeth in Red Bluff for specialist visits?
  • If you ride TRAX, which Route 5 or Glenn-Tehama Connection times work for your shift?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's inventory shows no Corning wage ordinance, so California's $16.90 is the floor when you hire someone directly. Across the nonmetro region BLS uses for Tehama County, aides earned a $16.50 median in May 2025, and Tehama County IHSS pays $18.40 from July 1, 2026. Agencies cost far more: $40 an hour at the California median, by CareScout's 2025 count. Overtime applies to a directly employed personal attendant after a nine-hour day or a 45-hour week. If your relative is on Medi-Cal, ask about IHSS before setting a budget; the county may authorize hours that pay a family member or another provider.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
