How to find an in-home caregiver in Tehama County

Most of the county lives outside its cities. Of 64,764 residents in the state's January 2026 estimate, 41,740 live in unincorporated areas, and the three incorporated cities (Red Bluff, Corning and Tehama) hold the rest. So the first thing a caregiver will ask is where the house is. In or near Red Bluff and Corning you can expect replies from people who live close by. For a home in Lake California, Paynes Creek or Paskenta, offer fewer and longer shifts, or help with gas, and say in the post whether the caregiver must drive your relative to appointments.

The county is also older than California overall: one resident in five (20.1%) is 65 or older in ACS 2020–2024, and nearly four in ten of those older residents (39.0%) report a disability. About one resident in five over age four (19.8%) speaks Spanish at home. Mention it early if Spanish is your parent's first language. Profiles nearest your ZIP head the caregiver list on this page, which fills in as people join.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Tehama County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Tehama County

Ask each applicant exactly what they hold and where they trained. Tehama County IHSS providers have been through the Public Authority's enrollment: online forms, an in-person orientation, an ID and Social Security card check, and a Department of Justice fingerprint check. Its registry holds only providers it has screened. CDPH certifies nurse assistants, and Shasta College features its CDPH-approved nurse assistant course on the page for its Red Bluff campus. A home care agency's aides must appear on the state aide registry; for independents it is optional. Past that, the checking is yours: phone two earlier employers, notice how each finalist speaks to your parent, and book a paid trial before any regular schedule. We at CaregiverConnect confirm no one's identity, license or history; a background report is yours to request, with written consent from the applicant.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which town are you based in, and how far is that from us?
  • Describe someone you cared for once they were home from St. Elizabeth. What did those first weeks involve?
  • Has the Tehama County Public Authority already enrolled you as an IHSS provider?
  • My mother prefers Spanish. Can you keep the conversation in Spanish and still follow the English discharge papers?
  • Will you drive her to appointments in Red Bluff, and is your car insured for that?
  • If she qualifies for a METS ride, can you help book it and go along?
  • Suppose she falls and is too heavy for you to lift. Walk me through what you do.
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Tehama County: hourly rates and schedules

Red Bluff and Corning. Early calls to get a parent up and fed, a later call for pills and supper, and a weekly trip to the pharmacy or doctor. Home from the hospital. Extended days, sometimes nights, until a parent is steady again after discharge. Outlying communities. Two or three long shifts a week instead of short daily calls, so the drive is worth the caregiver's time.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

When you set a private rate, start from these figures. No Tehama County city has a local wage above the state's $16.90 in UC Berkeley's inventory. Aides employed across Tehama's ten-county BLS nonmetro region earned a $16.50 median. Tehama County IHSS pays providers $18.40 an hour from July 1, 2026. Agencies in California charged a $40 hourly median for non-medical care, per CareScout (2025). If you hire a personal attendant yourself, you pay 1.5 times the rate for any time over nine hours daily or 45 weekly. IHSS is for Medi-Cal eligible older adults and people with disabilities, so for a relative on Medi-Cal, call Social Services about an IHSS assessment first; hours the county authorizes may cover some of the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
