How to find an in-home caregiver in Glenn County

Almost half of Glenn County's 29,031 residents (14,011, by the Department of Finance's January 2026 count) live outside its two cities, so where the home sits matters more than in a city search. In Orland or Willows, a caregiver who lives in either town can reach you; Orland's city site puts the two 15 miles apart. In the unincorporated parts of the county, expect fewer applicants, and spell out the distance from town, whether a car comes with the job, and whether you pay mileage.

Language is the second thing to settle. ACS 2020–2024 finds Spanish spoken at home by 36.8% of county residents aged five and up, and 18.6% of the county's people are foreign-born. If your father is more at ease in Spanish, write that in the first line of the post. Caregivers are listed nearest-first from your ZIP code, and the list grows as people in and around the county join.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Glenn County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.

Evaluating caregivers in Glenn County

Ask each applicant to show what they hold rather than describe it. An IHSS provider in Glenn County has been through Public Authority enrollment, which includes a Live Scan fingerprint check; the county notes it has fingerprinted registry applicants since September 3, 2004. Agencies must enter their aides in the state Home Care Aide Registry; for a caregiver you hire yourself it is optional. Nursing assistants hold a state certificate, which Butte College trains for at its Glenn County Center in Orland. Then do your own checking: call two past employers, let your parent meet each finalist, and pay for a single trial shift before fixing a schedule. Our site does not confirm anyone's identity, license or record. A background screen is something the family buys itself, with the applicant's signature on a consent form.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How long is your drive to our house, and on which days could you count on making it?
  • Are you already enrolled as a Glenn County IHSS provider, or on the Public Authority registry?
  • Mom speaks mostly Spanish. Can you keep the visit in Spanish and still read her English medication labels?
  • Will you drive her to appointments in Chico or Willows, and is your car insured for that?
  • Have you helped someone recover at home after a hospital stay outside the county? What did they need from you?
  • If she cannot get up after a fall and you cannot lift her alone, what do you do?
  • Could you help her apply for a Glenn Ride Transit Service Card and ride with her?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Glenn County: hourly rates and schedules

In Orland and Willows. Help at breakfast time with washing and dressing, a return at supper with the pill organizer, and a few clinic or pharmacy runs a week. After a hospital stay. Long days or overnights for several weeks while a parent regains strength. Out-of-town homes. Fewer, longer shifts, because two drives a day to an outlying home eat up a caregiver's time and fuel.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Glenn County families weighing a private rate can line up four numbers. The legal floor is California's $16.90, since UC Berkeley's ordinance inventory lists no local minimum wage in Orland, Willows or the county. The BLS median for aides in the ten-county nonmetro area that includes Glenn was $16.50 in May 2025. Glenn County IHSS pays its providers $17.90. For agency care, CareScout's 2025 survey of California found a $40 hourly median. Employing a personal attendant directly brings overtime rules: 1.5 times pay beyond nine hours daily or 45 weekly. The county describes IHSS as serving Medi-Cal eligible aged, blind or disabled people; if your parent may qualify, ask about IHSS before you budget, because authorized hours could pay for part of the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
