How to find an in-home caregiver in Colusa County
Fewer than 6 in 10 of the county's 22,003 residents live in its two cities, so the address of the home shapes the search more than in most places. A request in Williams or Colusa is within easy reach of caregivers who live in either city. Out near Grimes, Sites or Stonyford, expect a smaller pool of applicants, and widen it with longer shifts or mileage pay. Say clearly in the post how far out the home is and whether the caregiver will drive your parent to appointments.
Language is the other thing to put up front. In the 2020–2024 ACS, 51.4% of county residents past age four use Spanish at home, and 27.5% of the county was born abroad. If your mother prefers Spanish, write that at the top of the post and say whether the caregiver must also read medication labels in English. The caregiver list on this page sorts the nearest profiles to your ZIP code first and grows as people join.

Types of in-home care families in Colusa County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Colusa County
Ask every applicant which credentials they actually hold. Colusa County IHSS providers have completed Public Authority enrollment, which covers a Department of Justice Live Scan, an orientation and a signed provider agreement. The Home Care Aide Registry is compulsory for staff of licensed agencies and voluntary for independents, so ask which applies. CDPH certifies nursing assistants, and the adult school in Williams trains them. The rest of the checking falls to you: speak to two former employers, let your parent spend time with each finalist, and book a single paid trial before agreeing to regular hours. Our site verifies nobody's identity, license or record; a background report is something you would commission, with the applicant's signed consent.
Questions families here ask at interview
- How long is your drive to our home, and how many days a week could you realistically make it?
- Which of your past clients came home from Colusa Medical Center or its swing-bed unit, and what did they need?
- Has the Colusa County Public Authority already enrolled you for IHSS work?
- My father talks most easily in Spanish. Could you keep the whole visit in Spanish and still read his English prescriptions?
- Is your car insured for driving a client to appointments in Colusa, Williams or Yuba City?
- If my mother needs a county transit ride, will you call the dispatcher and ride with her?
- If she falls and is too heavy to lift alone, what are your next steps?
What in-home care costs in Colusa County: hourly rates and schedules
In Williams and Colusa. A morning call for getting washed, dressed and fed, a second call at suppertime with medications, and the odd clinic trip. After a hospital stay. Extended days, or nights, for the weeks it takes a parent to get back on their feet. Outlying farms and small towns. Fewer, longer shifts, because a caregiver driving out twice a day loses much of the pay to time and fuel.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, North Valley-Northern Mountains nonmetro area (includes Colusa County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Colusa County | $17.40 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
When you set a private rate, weigh four figures together. California's minimum wage is $16.90, and no city or unincorporated area here has a higher local rate in UC Berkeley's ordinance inventory. BLS puts the median for employed aides in Colusa's ten-county nonmetro area at $16.50. Colusa County pays IHSS providers $17.40. CareScout's 2025 survey found a $40 hourly median for agency home care across California. Hire a personal attendant directly and you pay one and a half times the rate once a shift tops nine hours, or the week tops 45. Because IHSS depends on Medi-Cal eligibility, if your parent has or may qualify for Medi-Cal, call Social Services on (530) 458-0280 before you budget; authorized IHSS hours could cover part of the care.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Colusa County: frequently asked questions
How do we apply for IHSS in Colusa County?
Call Social Services on (530) 458-0280 or go to 251 E. Webster Street in Colusa on a weekday. CDSS describes IHSS as help for aged, blind and disabled people who live at home and have a Medi-Cal eligibility determination; after that, a county social worker visits the home to decide on hours.
Can I be paid to look after my own parent?
Through IHSS, CDSS makes the approved recipient the employer, who hires their own provider. If your parent chooses you, you enroll with the Colusa County IHSS Public Authority: forms SOC 426 and SOC 846, an orientation, original ID and Social Security card, and a Live Scan. The county pays $17.40 an hour.
Is there a ride service to doctors outside the county?
Colusa County Transit drives residents to medical appointments in Sacramento, Yuba City, Chico, Woodland and other cities while grant money lasts. Book before 2 p.m. the day before. It cannot take on long series of daily treatments or outpatient surgery.
Where can a worn-out family caregiver get a break?
Passages Caregiver Resource Center offers family consultation, support groups and short-term respite to unpaid caregivers in Colusa County at no cost. Register with a family consultant on (530) 898-5925.
Does CaregiverConnect screen the caregivers?
No, screening is left to the family; we carry out no background, license or reference checks. Posting costs nothing; to message caregivers and confirm a hire, upgrade to Family Premium for $24.99 a month.
Will a caregiver drive out to Stonyford or Sites?
Some will, if the post is clear. Give the ZIP code, explain the drive, and offer either mileage or longer shifts on fewer days; that usually works better than asking for short daily visits to a remote home.
