How to find an in-home caregiver in Sutter County

Most of the county's 101,679 residents live in Yuba City or Live Oak, but about one in five live in unincorporated communities and farmland, from Tierra Buena and Sutter to Nicolaus and Pleasant Grove. Where your parent lives shapes the search. A Yuba City address is within reach of most local caregivers; a home well outside town may draw fewer applicants unless you offer longer shifts or help with mileage. Rideout, the Adventist Health hospital serving the area, sits across the Feather River in Marysville, part of Yuba County; if your parent is often there, say so in your post.

Home languages vary widely here. In ACS 2020–2024, 36.9% of county residents aged five and up reported a home language besides English: 20.0% Spanish and 14.1% another Indo-European language, the group that includes Punjabi. If your mother is more comfortable in Punjabi, Spanish or another language, put that preference at the very top of the post. The caregiver list further down puts the closest profiles to your ZIP code first and lengthens as new caregivers sign up.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Sutter County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Sutter County

Ask each applicant which credentials they hold. A Sutter County IHSS provider has completed state enrollment, including Live Scan fingerprinting through the Department of Justice and an orientation; providers on the Public Authority registry were enrolled first and then screened for it. The Home Care Aide Registry is mandatory for anyone a licensed agency sends to your door and optional for independents. CDPH keeps the record of certified nursing assistants. Paperwork only goes so far: speak with people the applicant has worked for, have your parent meet each finalist, and start with one paid shift. Our platform checks no identities, licenses or criminal records, so any screening report is yours to order, and only with the applicant's written authorization.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • From your home, how many minutes is it to our place outside town?
  • Tell me about a client you helped after Rideout in Marysville or a Yuba City post-acute stay.
  • Are you an enrolled Sutter County IHSS provider, or would you need to enroll?
  • Do you speak Punjabi or Spanish, and could you talk with my father in it all day?
  • Can you drive him to appointments in Yuba City, and is your car insured for that?
  • In summer heat or a smoky week, how would you keep him cool and safe indoors?
  • Would you be willing to use Dial-A-Ride with him for trips you cannot drive?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Sutter County: hourly rates and schedules

Yuba City and Live Oak. Morning help with washing and breakfast, evening visits, and rides to clinic appointments. After a discharge. Several weeks of longer days or overnight cover while a parent recovers. Rural homes. Fewer, longer shifts, since driving out twice a day adds up for the caregiver.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Before naming a private wage, compare it with four figures: California's $16.90 minimum (UC Berkeley's wage-ordinance list shows no Sutter County city with a higher local rate), the $16.50 metro median the BLS reports for aides, the $17.90 Sutter County IHSS wage, and the $40 hourly agency median CareScout found for California. If your parent lives on the Marysville side of the river, the IHSS rate there is Yuba County's $18.78. When you employ a personal attendant directly, state domestic worker law requires time-and-a-half for hours beyond nine on a single day or beyond 45 across the week. If Medi-Cal covers your parent, county-funded IHSS hours could replace part of the private bill; ask IHSS Intake at (530) 822-5990 before you budget private care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Sutter County: frequently asked questions

How does a parent apply for IHSS in Sutter County?

Call IHSS Intake at (530) 822-5990. Applicants must live in their own home in California, be 65 or older, blind or disabled, receive Medi-Cal and meet SSI/SSP income limits (or pay a share of cost). Anyone can make the referral, and a social worker then assesses the need.

Could I become my mother's paid IHSS caregiver?

Often, yes. Sutter County lets recipients choose a friend or family member as their IHSS provider. Once she is approved, she calls the Public Authority on (530) 822-7619 with your start date, and you complete provider enrollment.

Where can a family caregiver in Sutter County get support?

Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center offers free public classes and, for families who meet its eligibility rules, a set of free services. The county's Healthy Brain Initiative pages also list local dementia resources.

Is there a ride service for an older parent who no longer drives?

Yes. Yuba-Sutter Transit Dial-A-Ride carries people 65 and older and riders with qualifying disabilities on a shared curb-to-curb basis; reserve up to two weeks ahead on (530) 742-2877.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers before they apply?

No. The platform performs no background, license or reference checks, so that part is yours. You can post for free; Family Premium, $24.99 monthly, adds messaging and confirming a hire.

Will anyone come out to a farmhouse near Meridian or Nicolaus?

Post with the home's ZIP code and say what you will pay for mileage. Longer shifts on fewer days usually make a remote address more attractive than several short visits a week.
