How to find an in-home caregiver in Yolo County
Home care in Yolo County splits along its three cities. Woodland, Davis and West Sacramento each have bus service, a range of housing and caregivers living nearby; West Sacramento families can also draw on helpers who live across the river in Sacramento. The western and southern parts of the county are another matter. A request from Winters, Esparto, the Capay Valley or Clarksburg is likely to reach fewer people, so offer a mileage allowance or fewer, longer visits, and say plainly how far the house is from the nearest highway.
Language matters here. In the 2020–2024 ACS, 21.3% of Yolo residents five or older speak Spanish at home, and a third of the population is Hispanic or Latino. Whichever tongue Mom or Dad leans on, Spanish or any other, mention it early in the post. Caregiver cards lower on this page put the nearest people to your ZIP code first; more appear over time as caregivers register.

Types of in-home care families in Yolo County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Yolo County
Ask each applicant which credentials they can show. A Yolo County IHSS provider has finished the state provider orientation, Live Scan fingerprinting for the state Justice Department, and an identity check; anyone on the Public Authority registry has gone further, with an interview, a regional background check, a drug and alcohol screen, a TB test and reference checks. Any aide a licensed agency sends to a Yolo home needs a current state aide registration; a caregiver you hire on your own may or may not have one, since it is voluntary for them. CDPH certifies nursing assistants; one training course meets in Woodland. Then check for yourself. Phone two previous employers, interview at the house so your relative can judge the person too, and pay for one trial visit. We do not check backgrounds, licenses or references at CaregiverConnect; with the applicant's written permission, you can order a screening report on your own.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where are you based, and what does the drive to our house look like at 8 a.m.?
- Have any of your clients come home from Woodland Memorial, Sutter Davis or UC Davis Medical Center?
- Are you enrolled with Yolo IHSS, and has the Public Authority registry referred clients to you?
- How do you move someone from bed to a wheelchair, and have you used a gait belt?
- My father speaks mostly Spanish. How comfortable are you holding a conversation with him?
- If our regular caregiver is sick, could you cover short notice, and how would you reach a farm address west of Woodland?
- Would you ride along on Yolobus Special or drive him to appointments in Sacramento?
What in-home care costs in Yolo County: hourly rates and schedules
Woodland, Davis and West Sacramento. Morning help with bathing and breakfast, evening visits around family work hours, and drives to clinics. Winters, Esparto and Clarksburg. Longer daytime blocks or overnight stays so a caregiver is not making two long round trips a day. After a hospital stay. Short-term full days for two to six weeks, then tapering.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom metro | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Yolo County | $19.05 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
When you set a private hourly rate, compare four numbers: the $16.90 state minimum, which applies across Yolo since no city in the county has an ordinance of its own; $16.50, the federal midpoint wage for aides in the Sacramento metro that takes in Yolo; the $19.05 that Yolo County IHSS pays from January 1, 2026; and $40, CareScout's statewide median for an hour of agency care. A rate near the IHSS figure keeps you competitive with the work local caregivers can get through the county. California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights says an attendant who goes past nine hours on a given day, or past 45 over the week, is owed overtime. Medi-Cal members should apply for IHSS before the family budgets a full private schedule.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Yolo County: frequently asked questions
How does my mother apply for IHSS in Yolo County?
Phone an intake line: (530) 661-2955 in Woodland or (916) 375-6200 ext. 2955 in West Sacramento. Eligibility requires Medi-Cal plus age 65 or over, blindness or a disability; a county worker visits to assess her needs and repeats the assessment every 12 months.
Can IHSS help us find a caregiver, not just pay one?
Yes. After approval, the Public Authority can send a free list of screened registry providers who match her location, language and tasks. You still interview and hire; the recipient is the employer.
Who helps family members who are worn out?
Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center serves unpaid caregivers in Yolo and twelve other counties, with free classes and, for eligible families, free services. Call (916) 728-9333.
How can a parent without a car get to appointments?
Yolobus Special provides ADA paratransit for people who cannot use regular buses and can take eligible riders straight to Sacramento medical appointments. Apply first, then book on (530) 666-2877.
Does CaregiverConnect check the caregivers it lists?
No. Screening is left to families: the site does no criminal, license or reference checks. Posting is without charge; the $24.99 monthly Family Premium plan is what lets you send messages and record a hire.
My uncle lives near Esparto. Will caregivers travel that far?
Some will. Use his ZIP code in the post, include a mileage payment, and think about longer shifts on fewer days. Mention whether the house is on a paved road and how far it is from a main road.
