How to find an in-home caregiver in Dixon
About three in ten Dixon households (2,010 of 6,813, ACS 2020–2024) have a member past 65, and roughly 700 older residents live on their own. Families here usually piece care together: a relative covers evenings and weekends, a hired caregiver covers the workday, and IHSS pays for some hours if the parent qualifies. That pattern fits the way Dixon commutes. Eight in ten workers drive alone, averaging 26.7 minutes each way, so the gap is often between 7 a.m. and late afternoon.
Say exactly what the day looks like. Is it a shower and breakfast, pills at noon, a ride to CMC Dixon on West A Street, or a trip to the Senior/Multi-Use Center for chair yoga? Does your father use a walker, or need help getting out of a chair? Ask for a Spanish speaker if that is your parent's first language; ACS puts Spanish-at-home speakers at 27.4% of Dixon's population aged five-plus. Evaluating caregivers in Dixon
A few credentials can be checked. CNAs hold a CDPH certificate you can verify by number, and it shows when it expires. Licensed agencies may only send aides who hold a state Home Care Aide registration; for an independent caregiver, registering is a choice, and you can search the name either way. Someone on the Solano IHSS Public Authority registry has given two work references, cleared a criminal background check and agreed to use a personal car for client errands. After that, the checking is yours. Phone two past employers and let your parent take part in the interview. Before any regular schedule, book a short paid trial with a relative in the house. CaregiverConnect itself runs no screening or background checks of caregivers. Background reports are yours to order, and only once the applicant agrees in writing.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Would you bring my mother to the Senior/Multi-Use Center on South 5th Street and collect her before it closes at 2:30?
- Are you comfortable riding Readi-Ride with my father as his attendant when your car is not available?
- My mother has dialysis on North Lincoln Street three days a week; can you plan around those mornings?
- Would you be able to carry on a full conversation in Spanish with my father?
- What did you take away from any work in assisted living or memory care?
- Are you on the Solano IHSS Public Authority registry, or would you be willing to enroll?
- What would you do if my parent refused a shower two days in a row?

| Employed aides, Vallejo, CA metro (Solano County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Solano County | $18.10 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Dixon has passed no local minimum wage that the UC Berkeley Labor Center tracks; anyone on your payroll is owed $16.90 an hour at minimum, matching the state rate. The BLS median for Solano County aides was $16.50 in May 2025, before this year's state increase; Solano IHSS pays $18.10; and CareScout's 2025 survey found a $40.00 median for agency home care statewide. Hiring directly usually costs somewhere between those last two figures, depending on the tasks. Overtime at 1.5 times the rate starts after a personal attendant's ninth hour on a given day or 45th hour in a week. Parents on Medi-Cal who are over 65 or disabled should apply for IHSS before you commit to private hours: Solano County takes referrals on (707) 784-8259, extension 1, or on form SOC 295 by mail or fax, then sends a health care certification form (SOC 873) for the doctor and a social worker to the home. Allow up to 90 days.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
