How to find an in-home caregiver in Solano County

Search from the home where the care will happen. Solano's population is spread over seven cities and a rural remainder, and the people who answer a post usually live within a short drive. A request in Vallejo or Benicia reaches caregivers in the southwest of the county; a request in Vacaville or Dixon reaches a different group. If your parent lives in Rio Vista or out in the unincorporated county, offering mileage, a set weekly schedule or fewer, longer shifts gives distant applicants a reason to take the drive.

Say which language your relative is most at ease in. In the ACS 2020–2024, 31.5% of Solano residents aged five or more use a language other than English in the home, Spanish for 18.2%. Profiles below run from nearest to farthest relative to the ZIP code in the search box, and new sign-ups appear as they join, so enter your relative's code. If your relative already gets IHSS, you can combine a private hire with the hours the county pays for.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Solano County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Solano County

Check what can be checked. Before Solano IHSS pays anyone, the provider must register, sit through the county orientation in person and clear a background check. The Public Authority adds its own interview, reference calls and training for people on its registry. Licensed agencies are required to register every aide they send out with the state; independents decide for themselves whether to register. A CNA is certified by CDPH, and Solano Community College in Fairfield trains nursing assistants and home health aides. Then phone two former employers, introduce the candidate to your relative, and book one paid trial shift ahead of any regular schedule. CaregiverConnect itself performs no background or reference checks; you decide what screening to order, and it needs the candidate's written consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where in Solano do you live, and how much time does the trip here take on a weekday?
  • Have you cared for anyone discharged from Kaiser Vallejo, Kaiser Vacaville, Sutter Solano or NorthBay Medical Center?
  • Has Solano IHSS enrolled you, has the registry accepted you, and do you have a CNA or HHA certificate?
  • My father slips into Spanish when he is tired; are you comfortable with that?
  • If my mother needs rides to the doctor, will you use your own car, and what do you bill per mile?
  • If my parent fell or became confused during your shift, what steps would you take?
  • How much notice will you give if you cannot make a shift?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Solano County: hourly rates and schedules

Daily drop-in visits. Two to four hours for meals, medication reminders and a shower, common for a parent living alone. Workday cover. Weekday blocks while adult children commute, often with a drive to an appointment in Vallejo, Fairfield or Vacaville. Recovery stretches. Extra hours in the weeks following a discharge, reduced as strength returns. Overnights and live-in. For dementia or a high fall risk, sometimes shared between two caregivers.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Four figures bracket a private rate. California's minimum wage is $16.90, and Berkeley's Labor Center records no higher city rate anywhere in Solano. The May 2025 metro median for aides was $16.50 (a survey taken before the 2026 increase), Solano IHSS pays $18.10, and the CareScout survey sets California's agency median at $40 an hour. A direct hire normally costs more than IHSS but well under agency prices, depending on experience and the care involved. If your relative has Medi-Cal and is 65 or older or has a disability, apply for IHSS on (707) 784-8259, extension 1, before budgeting private hours; the county allows up to 90 days for the application. Overtime for a personal attendant starts once a workday tops 9 hours or a workweek tops 45.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
