How to find an in-home caregiver in Sacramento County
Start with your relative's address rather than your own. Sacramento County is a patchwork of seven cities and large unincorporated suburbs, and caregivers tend to work close to home: someone in Citrus Heights will happily cover Orangevale or Carmichael, but may not want a daily drive to Elk Grove. Post with the ZIP code where care happens, list the days and hours, and describe the tasks in plain terms (showering, transfers, medicine reminders, driving to appointments, overnight supervision). Caregiver profiles near that ZIP code appear above as people sign up, sorted by distance.
Language matters here. In ACS 2020–2024, 33.7% of county residents aged five and up have a home language other than English, divided among Spanish, Asian and Pacific Island languages and other Indo-European languages. Name the language your parent relaxes in, Spanish or otherwise, right in the post; it narrows the field to people who can actually talk with them. For the Delta towns and Isleton, where few caregivers live, consider fewer, longer shifts or offering mileage.

Types of in-home care families in Sacramento County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Sacramento County
Three credentials can be checked. IHSS providers enrolled with the Sacramento County Public Authority have sat through orientation and a DOJ Live Scan; those on the county's Provider Registry have also given three professional references and been interviewed. The state Home Care Aide Registry covers every agency aide and any independent who chose to register. CNAs are certified by CDPH after courses such as the ones at American River College or the Charles A. Jones adult school. Look each one up. After that, phone two past families or employers, make sure your relative meets each finalist, schedule one paid trial shift, and get written permission before ordering any background report. We do not vet caregivers at CaregiverConnect; the Verified badge says a document was submitted, nothing more.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where in the county do you live, and what does the morning drive to our door look like?
- Have you helped someone home from UC Davis Medical Center, Sutter, Mercy San Juan or a Kaiser hospital?
- Do you have a Sacramento County IHSS provider number, a Public Authority registry referral, CNA certification or a Home Care Aide number?
- Can you speak with my mother in her own language when she is tired or confused?
- Will you ride with my father on SacRT GO, or drive him in your own car?
- What would you do if Dad tried to leave the house at night?
- How do your hourly rates change for weekends, holidays and overnight stays?
What in-home care costs in Sacramento County: hourly rates and schedules
City and inner suburbs. Weekday mornings for bathing and breakfast, often paired with a few afternoon hours. Northeast suburbs (Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Orangevale). Longer daytime arrangements for older adults living alone, sometimes live-in. Elk Grove and Galt. Evening and weekend cover so working adult children get a break. Delta. Longer blocks a few days a week instead of short daily visits.

| Employed aides, Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Sacramento County | $19.15 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Three numbers frame a private rate. The legal floor is California's $16.90, because the Labor Center's 2026 inventory shows no local wage law anywhere in the Sacramento area. The county's IHSS rate is $19.15, and the CareScout median for an agency in California is $40. Direct hires usually settle somewhere in that $19.15 to $40 band, higher for heavy personal care or when the caregiver drives. With a county median household income of $92,175 (ACS 2020–2024), an agency-level budget is out of reach for many households, so check IHSS first if your relative has Medi-Cal. Budget for time-and-a-half when a shift tops nine hours or the week tops 45, as state domestic worker law requires.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Sacramento County: frequently asked questions
How do I apply for IHSS for my mother in Sacramento County?
Call DCFAS at (916) 874-9471 on a weekday between 9 and 4, or mail, fax or email the SOC 295 application. She needs to be aged 65-plus, blind or disabled, hold a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, and return a Health Care Certification (SOC 873). A social worker then assesses how many hours to authorize.
Can a family member be paid as the IHSS caregiver?
Yes. The county says a friend or relative may serve as the provider; they enroll through the Public Authority, and the person receiving care acts as the employer. The 2026 rate is $19.15 an hour.
Is there free help for me as the family caregiver?
Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center in Citrus Heights offers free services, including respite, to eligible unpaid caregivers; ACC Senior Services also runs a caregiver support program. Agency on Aging Area 4 can point you to both.
How does SacRT GO work for medical appointments?
Your relative must first be found ADA-eligible. Rides are shared, door-to-door, $5.00 each, and booked one to two days in advance; same-day trips are not available.
My father lives in Galt. Should I post here?
Yes, with his Galt ZIP code. Galt has no separate page yet, and caregivers who live in the south county will see your post first.
Does CaregiverConnect vet Sacramento County caregivers?
No. Posting costs nothing, and a Family Premium plan unlocks messaging and confirming a hire. Checking references, credentials and backgrounds is up to you.
