How to find an in-home caregiver in Carmichael

The ACS 2020–2024 counts 15,946 residents aged 65 or more, 20.7% of the population, including 2,811 who are 85 or older, and roughly 4,800 older householders who live by themselves. If the goal is keeping your parent safely in their own house, write the post around the routine that makes that possible: a morning visit for bathing and breakfast, an afternoon of company, or a few nights a week after a fall. Say which streets or cross streets you are near, what time of day matters, whether the job includes driving, and what you will pay per hour.

Language is worth a line too. About 21.3% of Carmichael residents five and over use a language other than English at home, and the largest group is not Spanish but other Indo-European languages (9.9%), followed by Spanish (5.9%). If your mother is more comfortable in her first language, name it. Profiles of caregivers who list 95608 inside their range appear below, and the list changes as people sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Carmichael

Some credentials you can check yourself. A certified nursing assistant shows up in CDPH's online verification. Every aide an agency sends must hold a Home Care Aide Registry number, and some independents register voluntarily; CDSS lists four licensed home care organizations with Carmichael addresses if you would rather go through an agency. Someone currently paid as a Sacramento County IHSS provider has gone through the Public Authority's enrollment, which includes orientation videos and a mandatory DOJ fingerprint check. After the paperwork, phone two families or employers the applicant has worked for, let your parent meet the final two candidates, and book one paid shift while a relative is at home. CaregiverConnect itself screens no one. A background report is your choice to buy, and only with the applicant's signed permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Have you cared for someone coming home from Mercy San Juan Medical Center or a post-acute stay at a nursing facility?
  • Which part of Carmichael or the surrounding area do you drive in from, and how do you cover a sick day?
  • Are you comfortable going along to the Gibbons Community Center café on Gibbons Drive and eating with Dad there?
  • Tell me about a client with memory loss who became upset late in the day. How did you calm things down?
  • Which of these can I look up for you: an IHSS enrollment, a Home Care Aide Registry listing or CDPH certification as a nursing assistant?
  • My mother falls back on her first language when she is tired. Is that a language you speak?
  • How do you record medicines given, meals eaten and anything unusual during a shift?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Carmichael: hourly rates and schedules

Mornings. A few hours to get up, wash, dress and eat breakfast, with medicines set out before the caregiver leaves. Late morning to early afternoon. Errands, appointments, or a senior class or lunch at one of the park district centers, then home for a rest. Overnights. A caregiver who sleeps over a few nights a week after a hospital stay or when dementia disturbs sleep. Respite blocks. A regular half day so the spouse or adult child doing most of the care can get out.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Carmichael has no wage ordinance of its own, and Sacramento County is not in the UC Berkeley Labor Center's inventory either, so the state's $16.90 is the least you may pay anyone you employ. Two other markers help: Sacramento County's IHSS rate of $19.15, and the $40 hourly agency figure that CareScout's 2025 survey reports as California's median. Expect private offers to land in between. Carmichael's ACS median household income is $85,914. With Medi-Cal in the picture, ask about IHSS before you commit to paying privately: the county takes applications on (916) 874-9471, weekdays 9 to 4. And if the caregiver works for you as a personal attendant, state law requires time and a half after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Carmichael

Agree on paper, signed by you and the caregiver, what the job includes, when it happens, what it pays per hour and for overtime, whether mileage is reimbursed, and how many days' notice ends it. Review hours together every week. Keep loose cash, jewelry and pain medication locked away, and ask your parent's bank to text alerts for withdrawals. Dial 911 for danger. Suspected abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of an older Carmichael resident should be reported to the county's Adult Protective Services, (916) 874-9377, staffed day and night; the state number, 1-833-401-0832, routes callers to their county after they enter a ZIP code. Read the guide to hiring privately for payroll and contract details, and the Sacramento County page for IHSS intake, the Area 4 Agency on Aging and Del Oro.
