How to find an in-home caregiver in Sacramento

Write one free post tied to your parent's Sacramento ZIP code that spells out what needs doing and when; anyone whose radius reaches that address may respond, and nearby caregiver cards show up above. Expect replies from inside the city and from Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights or the unincorporated suburbs to the north and east, so ask each applicant where they start out and what traffic is like on their route at your start time.

The more specific the post, the better the replies. Say whether your parent lives in an apartment or a house with stairs, uses a walker or wheelchair, and is seen at UC Davis Medical Center, Sutter, Kaiser or a Mercy hospital. Inside city limits 36.4% of residents aged five and up use another language at home (ACS 2020–2024); if your father relaxes in Spanish or something else, put that in the first line.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Sacramento

Ask which of three verifiable credentials a Sacramento caregiver holds. An IHSS provider number shows the person completed Sacramento County Public Authority enrollment, with orientation and a DOJ fingerprint check. A Home Care Aide Registry number is mandatory for anyone sent by a licensed agency and optional for independents. A CNA certificate from CDPH follows an approved course, such as the five-week program at Sacramento City Unified's adult school on Lemon Hill Avenue. Verify, do not assume. Then speak with two earlier employers, include your parent in the conversation, collect signed consent before any background report, and begin with a paid week on trial. Screening is your job, because CaregiverConnect does not do it.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which part of Sacramento are you coming from, and do you drive or ride SacRT?
  • Tell me about helping a patient home from UC Davis Medical Center, Sutter Medical Center or Mercy General.
  • Do you hold a Sacramento County IHSS provider number, CNA certification or a Home Care Aide Registry number?
  • Would you take Mom to the Hart Senior Center for a class and wait with her?
  • Dad sometimes says no to bathing and gets restless at dusk. What would you try?
  • Mom is most at ease in Spanish. Could you talk with her in it through the day?
  • Is your rate the same for overnights, weekends and days with driving?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Sacramento: hourly rates and schedules

Common Sacramento arrangements: a few weekday mornings for bathing, dressing and breakfast; daytime company for a parent who lives alone while adult children work downtown; evening and overnight cover for someone with dementia; and daily visits for the first weeks home from the hospital. If your relative attends adult day health care on weekdays, a caregiver may only be needed before pickup and after drop-off.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Sacramento has no city minimum wage of its own, so $16.90 is the legal floor. For comparison, IHSS in the county pays $19.15, BLS found a $16.50 median for metro aides in May 2025, and CareScout's California agency median is $40. A caregiver you hire yourself will usually ask for something between the county IHSS figure and an agency rate, with more for dementia care, overnights or driving. California's domestic worker rules require overtime for a personal attendant after the ninth hour of a day and the 45th of a week. With Medi-Cal in the picture, try IHSS first: the program can fund a provider of your choosing, even a son or daughter.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Sacramento: frequently asked questions

How do I find a caregiver for my parent in Sacramento?

Open a free family account and publish what your parent needs under their ZIP code; then read through whoever applies and pick who to meet.

What does a private caregiver cost in Sacramento?

There is no fixed rate. The county pays IHSS providers $19.15 an hour and agencies statewide have a $40 median, so a direct hire is typically negotiated somewhere in that range depending on the care and hours.

Is there a daytime program my mother could attend?

The city's Hart Senior Center in midtown runs classes and activities for adults 50 and older, and adult day health care centers such as Altamedix on North Freeway Boulevard and Kingdom Living on Bercut Drive serve people who need health monitoring during the day.

Can IHSS pay me to care for my own parent in Sacramento?

Often, yes. Once the county authorizes hours, an adult child can serve as the paid provider after Public Authority enrollment, earning $19.15 an hour.

How can my father get to appointments without a driver?

If he qualifies under the ADA, SacRT GO provides shared door-to-door rides for $5.00, booked a day or two ahead. A caregiver can also ride with him on regular SacRT service, where seniors pay a reduced fare.

Does CaregiverConnect check Sacramento caregivers' backgrounds?

No. We do not screen caregivers. Check credentials, call references and, with written consent, arrange a background report yourself before the first paid shift.
