Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Sacramento

The City of Sacramento had 539,765 residents on January 1, 2026, a third of everyone in Sacramento County. Nearly half of its households rent (48.3% in ACS 2020–2024), so a lot of care happens in apartments and small houses where an older parent lives alone or with one adult child. Requests come from neighborhoods all over the city, from Natomas in the north to Meadowview in the south, and families post them under their own ZIP code; any that match your radius appear above.

Think about the commute before you set that radius. The city sprawls across both sides of the American River, and crossing from South Natomas to Oak Park at 8 am is not the same as a short hop within midtown. If you ride SacRT, name your bus or light rail line; a family without a spare car wants to know you can get there and, if needed, accompany their parent to an appointment. Put languages near the top of your profile: 36.4% of residents five and older use another language at home, including Spanish (16.5%) and Asian and Pacific Island languages (11.6%).

Pay

Caregiver pay in Sacramento: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom, CA metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom, CA metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties)$16.50 median ($17.20 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 60,350 jobs; concentration 2.02× national
IHSS provider wage, Sacramento County$19.15CDSS; effective January 1, 2026

Nursing assistants, Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom, CA metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties)$22.84 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Unlike San Diego or Pasadena, the City of Sacramento does not set a minimum wage above the state's. When the UC Berkeley Labor Center updated its inventory of local California wage laws in July 2026, the capital was not on it, so a home care agency or other business employing you here owes at least the California rate of $16.90. The BLS survey of 60,350 aide jobs in the four-county metro found a $16.50 median and a $17.20 mean in May 2025, figures collected before the state minimum went up. Sacramento County IHSS pays $19.15 an hour, which is the most useful benchmark when a family asks what to offer; nursing assistants in the metro had a median of $22.84.

How to enroll as a provider in Sacramento County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Sacramento County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Sacramento

Non-medical work arranged directly with a family needs no state license. A licensed agency has to place its aides on the Home Care Aide Registry; for independents the $35, two-year listing is a choice. If the person you care for gets IHSS, you enroll with the county's Public Authority, whose office is at 9300 Tech Center Drive; it runs online registration in BOUNDS, offers in-person help with it on Monday and Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, and requires a DOJ Live Scan on its own form. IHSS payroll answers questions on (916) 874-9805, and a provider who goes more than 365 days without IHSS pay has to enroll again. Nursing tasks and skilled nursing jobs require CDPH certification. As a caregiver you must report suspected abuse; Sacramento County APS answers (916) 874-9377 day and night. The requirements guide has the statewide rules.
