Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Sacramento County

Sacramento County is unusual in how many of its people live outside any city. The Department of Finance counted 1,628,349 residents on January 1, 2026, and 602,889 of them, a little over a third, live in unincorporated territory. That means a large share of care requests come from places with a Sacramento or Carmichael mailing address but no city government of their own: Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Orangevale and the river communities of the Delta. Seven incorporated cities make up the rest, led by the City of Sacramento (539,765) and Elk Grove (188,319).

For a caregiver, the practical question is which side of the county you want to cover. The northeast suburbs along the American River have the oldest populations. The south county, from Elk Grove down Highway 99 to Galt, is younger and growing. Put the ZIP code you leave from in your profile and a radius that matches how you travel; a client in Orangevale is a long ride from south Sacramento. Name every language you speak, since a third of residents five and over have a home language other than English.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Sacramento County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom, CA metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom, CA metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties)$16.50 median ($17.20 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 60,350 jobs; concentration 2.02× national
IHSS provider wage, Sacramento County$19.15CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom, CA metro (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties)$22.84 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom MSA (El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties) projection: 55,230 aide jobs in 2023 to 73,060 in 2033 (+32.3%), about 111,260 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

The federal wage survey treats four counties as one labor market, so its $16.50 median aide wage (May 2025) mixes Sacramento County with Placer, El Dorado and Yolo, and was measured before the state minimum reached $16.90. The figure that belongs to this county alone is the IHSS rate: the Public Authority lists $19.15 an hour for 2026. No jurisdiction in this region shows up among the local wage ordinances the UC Berkeley Labor Center tracked in July 2026, which leaves agency work from Citrus Heights to Galt at the statewide $16.90. EDD expects metro aide employment to grow 32.3% from 2023 to 2033 against 8.8% for the whole workforce, producing 111,260 openings once turnover is counted.

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Sacramento County

Families who pay you directly for non-medical help need no license from you. Any licensed home care agency must register its staff with CDSS's Home Care Aide Registry; independents can sign up as well for $35, good for two years.
