Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Joaquin County

San Joaquin County is flat, low-lying farm and Delta country of 1,426 square miles, reclaimed from marsh beginning in 1869. Its 820,125 residents (Department of Finance, January 2026) are spread across eight cities and a scatter of unincorporated towns. Interstate 5 and State Route 99 both pass through Stockton, and the Bay Area's pull shows in the commute data: one county commuter in five (20.1%) needs at least an hour to reach work, and 10.0% need 90 minutes or more (ACS 2020–2024). The ACE train runs to San Jose on weekdays and RTD runs subscription buses to Livermore, Pleasanton and Santa Clara County, so many older adults here spend the working day alone while grown children commute.

Build your profile around the part of the county you live in. Use the ZIP code of your own front door, pick a radius you could drive at 7 a.m., and say whether you have a car; Lodi, Escalon, Manteca, Tracy and Ripon run their own small bus systems and RTD's network centers on Stockton, so clients elsewhere often need a driver. Among residents five and older, 43.0% use a language besides English at home, with Spanish at 27.1% and the Asian and Pacific Island language group at 9.2%. List every language you can hold a real conversation in.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in San Joaquin County

Postings here tend to ask for weekday bathing, dressing and company for a parent who lives alone or with working adult children, help after discharge from one of the Stockton, French Camp, Lodi, Manteca or Tracy hospitals, supervision for someone with memory loss, and weekend or evening respite for a spouse. If you are new to the work, start with meal preparation, errands, light housekeeping and rides to appointments; families who need transfers, bathing or dementia care usually want someone who has done it for pay before, or holds a CNA certificate.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in San Joaquin County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Stockton–Lodi, CA metro (San Joaquin County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Stockton–Lodi, CA metro (San Joaquin County)$16.50 median ($17.17 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 12,580 jobs; concentration 1.57× national
IHSS provider wage, San Joaquin County$18.97CDSS; effective January 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Stockton–Lodi, CA metro (San Joaquin County)$22.37 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Stockton–Lodi MSA (San Joaquin County) projection: 11,870 aide jobs in 2023 to 14,670 in 2033 (+23.6%), about 22,130 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

The Stockton–Lodi metro covers exactly this county, so the BLS figures describe it directly: 12,580 aides in May 2025, a $16.50 median that sits below today's $16.90 state minimum, and a $17.17 mean, against $22.37 for nursing assistants. The IHSS rate of $18.97 is the more useful yardstick for private work. EDD expects the county's aide jobs to grow 23.6% between 2023 and 2033, more than three times its 7.2% forecast for all occupations. Not one of the eight cities has passed a local wage ordinance, per the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory.

How to enroll as a provider in San Joaquin County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Joaquin County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Joaquin County

Nobody needs a license to be paid by a household for non-medical help. An agency that employs you is obliged to enter your name in the state's Home Care Aide Registry, while an independent may join it for a $35 fee. For IHSS, the recipient picks you and returns form SOC 426A to their county social worker at the Human Services Agency, 102 S. Its Registry, which refers providers to IHSS recipients who have none, adds a reference check. Hospital and nursing home jobs require CDPH certification. Suspected elder or dependent-adult abuse is reported to San Joaquin County APS, (209) 468-3780, at any hour. Our requirements guide covers the state rules.
