Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Contra Costa County

The county splits into three parts, and its own agencies organize work that way. West County runs along the bay from Richmond, San Pablo and El Cerrito up to Pinole and Hercules. Central County covers Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Lafayette, Orinda and Moraga, with Danville and San Ramon to the south. East County takes in Pittsburg, Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood along Highway 4. The IHSS Public Authority assigns a registry specialist to each of those three areas, plus one for Spanish-speaking providers, and the county prints a separate senior resource guide for each. Treat that as a hint: a client in Brentwood and a client in El Cerrito are a long day apart, so most caregivers choose one of the three areas and stay in it.

So build your profile around the area you live in. Give the ZIP code you start from, a radius you will actually drive, and whether you rely on buses. County Connection runs fixed routes and LINK paratransit in central county, Tri Delta Transit covers the east, and many clients ride with their caregiver to appointments. Languages count. At home, 37.5% of residents aged five and over talk in something besides English, and 19.1% speak Spanish (ACS 2020–2024). If you speak Spanish or any other language a client might prefer, lead your profile with it.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Contra Costa County

Households in the county post for morning and evening personal care for a parent who lives alone, a driver and companion for medical visits in Walnut Creek or Martinez, overnight cover for someone with dementia, help after a hospital stay, and the occasional live-in arrangement. Without paid experience, start with companionship, errands, meal preparation and housekeeping; families tend to reserve bathing, transfers and dementia care for applicants who have done the work before or hold a nursing assistant certificate.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Contra Costa County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The BLS figures describe a five-county metro of 119,120 home health and personal care aides with a $17.28 median, so they mix Contra Costa with San Francisco and the Peninsula. The more local yardstick is IHSS: the county Public Authority advertises $20.03 an hour for registry providers, with overtime and travel time available. Two west county cities set their own floors, according to UC Berkeley's Labor Center: Richmond at $19.18 and El Cerrito at $18.82, both from January 1, 2026. Concord, Walnut Creek, Antioch and the other cities in the county do not appear in that inventory, so employers there follow the $16.90 state minimum. Ask a private family to pay at least the IHSS rate for hands-on care.

How to enroll as a provider in Contra Costa County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Contra Costa County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Contra Costa County

Private, non-medical work arranged with a household carries no licensing requirement. The state aide registry, $35 for two years, becomes mandatory once a licensed agency is your employer. For IHSS, you go through the Contra Costa IHSS Public Authority at 500 Ellinwood Way, Suite 110, in Pleasant Hill, (800) 333-1081. You enroll online, watch the state and union videos, then attend an in-person orientation bringing photo identification plus the original Social Security card, and take Live Scan fingerprints, which you pay for yourself ($48 to $80, according to the Public Authority). The registry adds an application, a face-to-face interview and reference checks. Hospital and nursing-facility jobs require CDPH certification as a nursing assistant. All caregivers are mandated reporters; Contra Costa APS takes reports 24 hours a day at 1 (800) 510-2020 (landlines inside the county). The Contra Costa IHSS guide and the California requirements guide have the full steps.
