Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Richmond
The Department of Finance put Richmond at 113,695 residents on January 1, 2026, and nearly one household in three has a member aged 65-plus. Requests for private help in Richmond usually start with one of three situations: adult children in their thirties and forties who share a house with a parent (the average Richmond household holds 2.80 people), older homeowners who live on their own, and families arranging help after a stay at the Kaiser campus downtown. A posting carries the client's ZIP code, so watch for 94801, 94804 and 94805, and new West County postings show above as families publish.
Many clients do not drive. 8.3% of Richmond households have no vehicle (ACS 2020–2024), and older residents often lean on R-Transit, the city's own paratransit service, or on East Bay Paratransit for longer trips. If you own a car and your insurance lets you carry a client, say so near the top of your profile. Spanish matters more here than almost anywhere else in the inner Bay Area: it is the home language of 39.5% of Richmond residents over age four, and about two-thirds of the city's foreign-born residents come from Latin America. If you also speak an Asian language, list it, because 27.3% of immigrants in Richmond were born in Asia.

Types of caregiver jobs in Richmond
Typical West County requests include help in the morning to bathe and dress, cooking for someone recovering at home, rides to Kaiser appointments, watching over a parent with memory loss while relatives commute, and weekend or overnight cover. With no paid experience, companionship and errand shifts are the usual first jobs; an IHSS provider number or a CNA certificate opens hands-on personal care.

Caregiver pay in Richmond: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median ($18.66 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 119,120 jobs; concentration 1.81× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Contra Costa County | $20.03 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $26.96 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Richmond's ordinance requires employers to pay at least $19.18 an hour for each hour worked within the city's boundaries, up from $17.20 in 2024, and employers must post the city's official notice where staff can see it. That floor sits well above the state $16.90 and nearly two dollars above the $17.28 May 2025 BLS median for metro aides, so an agency rate below $19.18 for a Richmond client is a red flag. Contra Costa County's IHSS rate of $20.03 is only 85 cents higher than the city minimum. Metro CNAs had a $26.96 median, the clearest pay step up from personal care. The city's own page does not say whether a household that hires you directly counts as an employer under the ordinance; if that applies to you, ask the Employment and Training Department at 330 25th Street, 510-307-8011.

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Richmond
California's rules apply in Richmond as everywhere else in the state. Non-medical care that you arrange directly with a family needs no license, and registering as a home care aide with CDSS is optional for you unless a licensed home care agency hires you; then registration is required. IHSS work runs through the Contra Costa County Public Authority: call (800) 333-1081 to sign up as a provider, to be matched with a recipient through its registry or to sort out timesheets in the Electronic Service Portal. You need CDPH certification as a nurse assistant for facility jobs or nursing tasks. Because you act as a care custodian, section 15630 of the Welfare and Institutions Code makes you a mandated reporter, and Contra Costa APS takes reports around the clock. The California requirements guide has the full statewide version.
