How to find an in-home caregiver in Richmond
Start with one free post that names your parent's ZIP code (94801, 94804 or 94805), the days and hours you need, and the tasks: bathing, cooking, medication reminders, rides or overnight supervision. Any caregiver who has set a radius reaching that address may apply, and profiles from nearby appear above as people join. Replies may come from San Pablo, El Cerrito, Pinole, North Richmond or across the county line in Berkeley and Oakland, so ask each person how they get to you and how long it takes at your start time.
Language is worth putting in the first sentence of your post. According to ACS 2020–2024 figures, English is not the home language for 53.3% of Richmond residents past their fifth birthday, and Spanish leads the rest; 47.3% of local Spanish speakers report limited English. When your mother is happiest speaking Spanish or another language, a caregiver who shares it will make bathing, meals and doctor visits easier. Mention stairs, a hospital bed, a walker or a pet, and whether your parent is a Kaiser member who uses the Nevin Avenue campus.

Evaluating caregivers in Richmond
Richmond families can verify three things. Holding an IHSS provider number in this county means the person has enrolled with the county Public Authority. CDSS registry numbers for home care aides are required of anyone placed by a licensed agency and optional for independent caregivers. A CNA certificate from CDPH shows a state-approved course and exam. Get each number and confirm it yourself. Then call two references, preferably families rather than friends, bring your parent into the interview, obtain signed consent before running any background check yourself, and agree a paid trial week before committing. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens or vets the people who apply, so these steps are yours.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Which part of the East Bay do you start from, and what is the travel time to central Richmond?
- Have you helped someone settle back home after a stay at Kaiser Richmond or Kaiser Oakland?
- Can you show me an IHSS enrollment, a CDSS aide registration or CNA papers I can verify?
- Mom speaks Spanish most comfortably. How much of the day could you spend speaking it with her?
- Could you book and ride along on R-Transit or East Bay Paratransit trips with my father?
- Dad has memory loss and sometimes tries to leave the house in the evening. What would you do?
- Would you take Mom to lunch at the Richmond Senior Center on MacDonald Avenue and stay with her?
- Does your hourly rate change for overnights, weekends or days with a lot of driving?
What in-home care costs in Richmond: hourly rates and schedules
Richmond postings usually fall into a few patterns: two or three weekday mornings for personal care and breakfast, a long daytime shift while adult children commute to San Francisco or Oakland, short evening visits for dinner and medications, overnight watch for a parent living with dementia, and daily visits for a couple of weeks after a hospital stay. Some families combine a caregiver with a senior lunch program, so help is needed only before and after the midday meal.

|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Contra Costa County | $20.03 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Inside Richmond, any employer must pay at least $19.18 an hour under the city's minimum wage ordinance, which started at $11.52 in 2016. The city page is silent on a household employing one caregiver at home, so call the Employment and Training Department (510-307-8011) if you need certainty; in practice most caregivers will ask for more than that anyway. Contra Costa IHSS pays providers $20.03, the BLS May 2025 survey recorded $17.28 as the typical aide wage across the metro, and CareScout's California median for agency home care is $40.00. Families hiring on their own typically agree a rate above IHSS and below the agency number, higher for dementia care or overnights. Budget for overtime as well: California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights triggers it for personal attendants after a ninth daily hour or a forty-fifth weekly hour. With Medi-Cal in place, look into IHSS before you pay out of pocket: a relative can become the paid provider.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
