How to find an in-home caregiver in El Cerrito

Older residents are a large share of El Cerrito. ACS 2020–2024 counts 5,363 people aged 65 and up, 718 of them past 85, and an estimated 1,666 older residents living alone, two-thirds of them women (1,106). Working from home is common (31.8% of El Cerrito workers do it), yet a remote job still fills the day, and a few covered hours can let a parent keep their routine while the family gets through a working day. In your post, list the tasks in order: morning medications, a shower with standby help, the Tuesday-to-Thursday Café Costa lunch on Moeser Lane, a walk, dinner.

Language and culture matter in a city where 28.3% of residents are Asian, including 12.8% Chinese and 2.6% Japanese, and Spanish is the home language of 7.8% of residents five or older. Say which language your parent prefers, and whether they would enjoy outings such as the Sakura Kai classes for Japanese-speaking seniors. If your parent no longer drives, mention it: 7.4% of El Cerrito households have no vehicle, and the caregiver may need to drive, book Easy Ride or ride along. The profiles nearest 94530 are listed below and change as caregivers sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in El Cerrito

Start by asking what each applicant can prove. CNAs have a certificate number with an expiry date. People on the Contra Costa IHSS Public Authority registry were interviewed by registry staff, had references checked and passed a Live Scan fingerprint check. Aides sent by a licensed agency, such as the two based in El Cerrito, carry a number from California's aide registry; an independent caregiver might, but is not obliged to. Then do your own homework. Speak with two past employers by phone, let your parent take part in choosing, and arrange one paid trial visit with family in the house. CaregiverConnect runs no screening and no background checks. If you want a criminal background report, the applicant must agree in writing and your family orders it.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • If I booked Easy Ride to Café Costa on Tuesday, could you have my mother ready for an 11:15 pickup?
  • What rate do you charge, and are you aware of El Cerrito's $18.82 floor for 2026?
  • In what languages can you hold a full day of conversation with my father?
  • Tell me about a client with dementia: what helped on restless late afternoons?
  • Do you hold a Contra Costa IHSS provider enrollment already? If my mother is approved, would you get one?
  • Would you be comfortable taking her to an appointment at the Sutter care center in Albany?
  • If you found my father on the floor when you arrived, what would you do first?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

El Cerrito sets its own minimum wage: $18.82 an hour in 2026 and $19.36 from January 1, 2027, for staff who log two or more weekly hours in El Cerrito. Chapter 6.95 of the municipal code covers any person who conducts business or maintains a business facility in the city; it is not stated outright whether a family hiring a caregiver at home is included, so ask the city if you need certainty. For context, aides in the five-county metro earned a $17.28 median in the May 2025 BLS survey, IHSS in Contra Costa pays $20.03, and CareScout's 2025 survey puts a non-medical agency hour in California at a $40 median. Employ a personal attendant yourselves and state overtime begins past nine hours daily or 45 weekly. IHSS could take over the cost: it serves Medi-Cal-eligible residents who are blind, permanently disabled or 65-plus; Contra Costa EHSD takes applications on (925) 229-8434, and a social worker visits once the SOC 873 health form is complete.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
