How to find an in-home caregiver in Hercules

In ACS 2020–2024, 40.4% of Hercules households, two in every five, include someone past 65, and an estimated 842 older residents live alone. Relatives with jobs are often gone for long stretches: the average Hercules trip to work is 37.6 minutes, and 62.9% of workers drive by themselves. A useful post starts with the gap in the week that no relative can fill, then lists what must happen in it, for example breakfast and pills, a shower with someone standing by, a lift to the Senior Center for the 11:30 Café Costa lunch, or an afternoon walk.

Spell out languages too. In the ACS language table, 21.8% of Hercules residents aged five-plus are speakers of Asian and Pacific Island tongues at home and 10.0% of Spanish, and a fifth of the city (21.6%) is Filipino, so a parent who is more comfortable in Tagalog, Ilocano, a Chinese language or Spanish can ask for a caregiver who shares it. Mention whether the helper will drive your parent's car or their own. The caregivers whose profiles sit closest to 94547 are shown below, and that list changes as people join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Hercules

Ask each applicant which credential they hold, then check it. Someone who says they are a CNA can tell you the certificate number and when it lapses. A caregiver taken onto the Contra Costa IHSS Public Authority registry has cleared state Live Scan fingerprinting and attended the required orientations. Agency aides carry a Home Care Aide Registry number; independent caregivers may register voluntarily, so the lack of one is not a warning sign by itself. Your own checks still matter most. Phone two former employers. Let your mother or father judge the shortlist face to face, then book one paid trial morning with a relative at home. CaregiverConnect itself does no vetting, screening or background checks on members; if you want a criminal record report, order it yourself with the applicant's signed consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • From your home, what time would you leave to be at our door in Hercules by 7:30?
  • Could you drive my mother to the Hercules Senior Center for tai chi and stay or come back after lunch?
  • Have you booked WestCAT Senior Dial-A-Ride trips before, including a return ride on the same call?
  • Which languages can you use comfortably with my father for a whole day?
  • Do you already hold a Contra Costa IHSS provider number, and if you don't, are you willing to apply?
  • Has a visiting nurse or hospice team ever shared a client with you, and how did you divide the work?
  • Say my father slips in the bathroom and cannot stand: walk me through your first five minutes.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's Labor Center records no Hercules wage ordinance, so the state minimum of $16.90 governs any caregiver your household puts on its payroll. Set that beside three other numbers: $17.28, the May 2025 BLS median aide wage in the five-county metro; $20.03, what Contra Costa IHSS pays; and the $40 hourly California median that CareScout's 2025 survey found for agency homemaker help. Overtime law reaches your kitchen table too: once your family is the direct employer of a personal attendant, work beyond nine hours in a day, or beyond 45 across the week, earns time and a half. Before paying out of pocket, see whether IHSS fits: Contra Costa EHSD lists the conditions as Medi-Cal eligibility plus being 65-plus, blind or permanently disabled. To apply, call (925) 229-8434. After the SOC 873 health form is filled in, expect a home visit from a county social worker.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
