How to find an in-home caregiver in Antioch

Publish one free post with your parent's Antioch ZIP code (94509 or 94531), the hours you need covered and a plain list of tasks. Anyone whose radius reaches the address can respond, and nearby caregiver profiles appear above as people join. Applicants are most likely to come from Antioch itself or from Pittsburg, Oakley, Brentwood and Bay Point, so ask how far each person drives and whether Highway 4 traffic at your start time is a problem for them.

Timing is the detail Antioch families most often leave out. Working residents here spend 42.0 minutes on average getting to work (ACS 2020–2024), so if you leave at 6 am and get home at 7 pm, say so, and say whether you need someone on weekends. Mention whether your parent uses Kaiser Antioch or Sutter Delta, whether there are stairs or a pool, and any language preference: among Antioch residents over age four, 37.7% use another language at home, Spanish most of all.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Antioch

Ask each applicant which of these they hold, then verify it. IHSS provider numbers are issued after enrollment with Contra Costa's Public Authority. CDSS issues registry numbers to home care aides; agency staff must have one, independents may. A CNA certificate from CDPH means a state-approved course and exam, such as the evening program at Pittsburg Adult Education Center. Beyond paperwork, talk to two previous employers, include your parent in the interview, check the driving record if the job involves taking your parent out, obtain written permission before a background report, and book a paid trial of about a week first. CaregiverConnect neither screens nor vets caregivers, so the checking falls to you.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which town do you drive in from, and what does the trip to Antioch look like at our start time?
  • Can you be here before I leave for work, and what happens if Highway 4 is backed up?
  • Have you cared for someone recently discharged from Kaiser Antioch or Sutter Delta Medical Center?
  • Which credentials can you show me: IHSS enrollment in Contra Costa, a CDSS aide registration, or CNA certification?
  • Are you comfortable driving Dad in his car, and is your license clean?
  • Mom still speaks Spanish at home. Can you hold a conversation with her in it?
  • Mom fights the evening shower since her dementia diagnosis. What approach would you take?
  • What would you charge for a 12-hour weekday, and is the rate different on weekends?

What in-home care costs in Antioch: hourly rates and schedules

Antioch families commonly post early-morning starts so a caregiver arrives before relatives leave for work, full weekday shifts covering a long commute, evening help with dinner and bedtime, weekend relief for a family member who provides care all week, and two to four weeks of daily visits after a hospital discharge. A parent who goes to the Antioch Senior Center for lunch may only need help getting ready and getting there.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Antioch has no wage ordinance of its own on the Berkeley Labor Center list; California's $16.90 is therefore the lowest legal rate. Few experienced caregivers will accept that: Contra Costa IHSS pays $20.03, the BLS May 2025 aide median across the metro was $17.28, and agencies statewide charge a CareScout median of $40.00 an hour. Direct-hire rates in most families end up above IHSS yet well under the agency median, paying more for dementia care, lifting, driving or nights. A caregiver who arrives before you leave and stays until you return can cross the overtime line for personal attendants, which the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights draws at nine hours in a single day and 45 in a single week. Medi-Cal enrollees should try IHSS before anything else, since it can pay a relative of the recipient's choosing.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Antioch: frequently asked questions

How do I find a caregiver for my mother in Antioch?

Sign up as a family for free, post her care needs and schedule under her Antioch ZIP code, and look through the caregivers who respond before choosing whom to interview.

How much should I pay a private caregiver in Antioch?

The legal minimum is the state $16.90, but the county pays IHSS providers $20.03 and California agencies charge a $40.00 median. Most direct arrangements fall between those two, with extra for nights or dementia care.

Can my father use Tri Delta paratransit if he does not have a disability?

Yes, if he is 65 or older and the trip is within Tri Delta's East County service area; senior rides depend on availability. Call 925-706-4398 to register.

Does a caregiver pay a fare when riding paratransit with my parent?

Not on Tri Delta, as long as the need for a personal care attendant is registered with its Accessible Services Department and mentioned when the ride is booked.

Can I be paid through IHSS to look after my parent in Antioch?

Often, yes. Once the county authorizes IHSS hours for a parent on Medi-Cal, your parent can name you as provider, paid $20.03 an hour after Public Authority enrollment. See the Contra Costa IHSS guide.

Will CaregiverConnect check an Antioch caregiver's background for me?

No, we do not screen caregivers. Ask for credential numbers and verify them, call references, and get written consent before ordering a background check of your own.
