How to find an in-home caregiver in Stockton

Start with a free post under your parent's Stockton ZIP code that spells out the tasks, days and hours, and anyone whose travel radius reaches that address can apply. Caregivers living near Stockton are shown above as their profiles go live, and they may come from the city itself or from Lodi, Manteca, Lathrop or Tracy. Ask each applicant how they will get to you: Interstate 5 and Highway 99 both cut through the city, and a caregiver crossing town at 8 a.m. needs a realistic start time. Mention the details that change the job, such as stairs, a walker or wheelchair, a dog, which hospital or clinic your parent uses, and whether anyone else is in the house by day.

Language matters in this city more than most. Per ACS 2020–2024, 47.5% of Stockton residents aged five or more use a home language other than English, chiefly Spanish (30.4%) or one of the Asian and Pacific Island languages (12.8%). If your mother is more comfortable in one of them, make that the opening line of the post.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Stockton

A Stockton caregiver may hold any of three credentials you can confirm. San Joaquin County IHSS providers are enrolled with the Human Services Agency and fingerprinted through Live Scan; the Public Authority also reference-checks anyone it lists on its Registry. Agency aides, and independents who opt in, can be looked up on the state Home Care Aide Registry. CNAs carry CDPH certification, and San Joaquin Delta College on Pacific Avenue runs the local training course. Check the credential itself, phone two former employers, interview with your parent present, pay for a trial shift, and buy a background report only after the caregiver consents in writing. CaregiverConnect itself screens nobody, and its Verified badge confirms nothing beyond an uploaded document.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which part of Stockton do you live in, and would I-5 or Highway 99 be part of your drive?
  • Have you helped a client home from St. Joseph's, Dameron or San Joaquin General?
  • Are you enrolled as a San Joaquin County IHSS provider, or a CNA?
  • Could you book RTD paratransit for my father and ride along as his attendant?
  • What would you do if my mother with dementia started walking out the front door at dusk?
  • Can you talk with Dad in Spanish?
  • Do you charge differently for weekends or overnight shifts?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Stockton: hourly rates and schedules

Stockton families most often post weekday daytime hours while adult children are at work, sometimes in the Bay Area or Sacramento. Other common patterns are two short visits a day to cover getting up and getting ready for bed, overnight help while someone recovers from a hospital stay, and a single long weekend shift so a spouse can rest. In-home respite and homemaker help funded through the county can reduce the private hours you need to buy.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With no Stockton wage ordinance in place, a caregiver you employ must earn at least California's $16.90. The county pays its IHSS providers $18.97, the BLS median for aides in the metro is $16.50, and CareScout's survey found a $40 hourly median among California agencies. A direct hire usually costs well below an agency, but you take on the employer's duties, including time-and-a-half once an attendant's day passes 9 hours or the week passes 45. With median household income in the city at $79,907, check IHSS eligibility before committing to many private hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Stockton: frequently asked questions

How fast can I find a caregiver in Stockton?

Post today listing your parent's ZIP code, schedule and duties; caregivers within range get notified and can apply right away. Meeting two or three and booking a trial shift usually decides it.

What does a private caregiver cost in Stockton?

Most independent caregivers will ask for at least what IHSS pays in the county, $18.97 an hour; the statewide agency median is $40. Driving, nights and dementia care push a rate up.

Could a relative be the paid IHSS provider in Stockton?

Yes. If your parent is approved, they hire the provider, and that can be a relative or friend. The provider registers with IHSS, and the recipient is legally the employer.

Where do I take a concern about a Stockton nursing home?

Call the county's Long-Term Care Ombudsman on (209) 468-3785. For abuse at home, use the APS line instead.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers' backgrounds?

No. We do not screen anyone. Verify credentials, call references and arrange a consented background check yourself before the first paid shift.
