How to find an in-home caregiver in San Joaquin County
The county's geography shapes who will answer your post. Stockton, with 322,436 residents, is the hub: RTD's buses and ADA paratransit are centered there, as are Delta College's nursing assistant course and the St. Joseph's and Dameron hospitals. Tracy and Manteca, each near 100,000 people, and Lodi at 68,513 have their own hospitals and small city bus systems, so a caregiver from the same town is often the practical choice. In Ripon, Escalon, Lathrop, Mountain House and the unincorporated Delta, the pool of nearby caregivers is thinner, and a post that mentions mileage or offers longer, less frequent shifts reaches further. Since one commuter in five here (20.1%) is on the road an hour or longer (ACS 2020–2024), ask every applicant where they are driving from.
Language is worth stating in your post. At home, 27.1% of county residents over age four use Spanish and 9.2% an Asian or Pacific Island language; 17.5% rate their English below very well. When your father would rather talk in Spanish or another tongue, lead the post with that. Caregiver profiles appear above as people join, sorted by distance, so post with the ZIP code where your relative actually lives.

Types of in-home care families in San Joaquin County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in San Joaquin County
You can verify three kinds of credential locally. County IHSS providers have enrolled with San Joaquin County and cleared Live Scan fingerprinting, and the IHSS Public Authority screens references before adding anyone to its Registry. Every aide employed by a licensed agency, and any independent who signs up, is searchable on the state Home Care Aide Registry. A CNA's certificate comes from CDPH, and Delta College's 10-week course in Stockton is the local route to it. Confirm the credential online, ring two earlier employers, have your relative join the interview, pay for one trial shift, and get signed permission before buying any background report. That vetting falls to you, since CaregiverConnect performs no checks of its own; its Verified badge reflects only an uploaded document.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where do you start your drive, and could you reliably arrive by 8 a.m.?
- Tell me about a client you supported after St. Joseph's, Dameron, San Joaquin General or Lodi Memorial sent them home.
- Do you hold county IHSS enrollment, CNA certification or Home Care Aide registration?
- Would you be able to talk with my mother in Spanish, or in the language she grew up with?
- Would you help her book and ride RTD paratransit, or drive her yourself?
- On a hot Valley afternoon, how would you keep my mother, who has dementia, cool and calm?
- Is your rate the same on weekends and overnight as on weekdays?
What in-home care costs in San Joaquin County: hourly rates and schedules
Weekday daytime. The usual pattern, covering the hours adult children spend at work, sometimes as far off as the Bay Area or Sacramento. Short morning and evening visits. Help getting up and ready, then medications and dinner, around an adult day program in Lodi or a family member's work hours. Overnights and live-in. For late-stage dementia or recovery, and more realistic than daily trips in the rural south and Delta.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Stockton–Lodi metro (San Joaquin County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, San Joaquin County | $18.97 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The legal floor everywhere in the county is California's $16.90; the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory shows no local ordinance here. Three local figures frame a private rate: the $16.50 BLS median for employed aides in the metro, the $18.97 IHSS wage set for the county, and the $40 an hour CareScout reports as California's agency median, or $91,520 a year at 44 hours a week. Direct hires usually fall between the IHSS and agency numbers. Overtime is owed to a personal attendant whose day runs beyond 9 hours or whose week runs beyond 45. For a relative on Medi-Cal, an IHSS application should come before any private arrangement.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in San Joaquin County: frequently asked questions
My parent has Medi-Cal. How do we start IHSS?
Make sure your parent has Medi-Cal, then send the SOC 295 application and the SOC 873 health certification signed by their doctor to the Human Services Agency, or call (209) 468-1119. A social worker visits the home to assess hours; the provider your parent hires is paid $18.97 an hour.
Is there respite help for me as the family caregiver?
Yes. Through its Family Caregiver Support Program the county pays for adult day care at Lodi Memorial and for in-home respite from Catholic Charities for caregivers of someone over 60 or with Alzheimer's. Start the referral through (209) 468-1104.
Can a caregiver ride RTD paratransit with my mother?
If she is ADA-certified and qualifies for a personal care attendant, the attendant rides free; other companions pay the $3.00 fare. Call between 8 and 5 to book a ride for tomorrow or the day after.
My father lives near Escalon. Will anyone come out?
Post with his ZIP code and say what mileage you will cover. Fewer caregivers live in the rural east and south, so longer shifts on fewer days often draw more applicants than short daily visits.
Can the county help make the house safer?
Its Fall Prevention Program, open to anyone 60 or over at risk of falling regardless of income, offers home assessments and equipment such as grab bars, shower chairs and threshold ramps. Refer through Older Adult Information and Assistance.
Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers?
No. Reading profiles, checking references and ordering any background report are your steps. Posting costs nothing; Family Premium, $24.99 a month, unlocks messaging and confirming a hire.
