How to find an in-home caregiver in Contra Costa County

Plan the search around the part of the county where your relative lives. County services already divide it into West (Richmond, San Pablo, El Cerrito, Pinole, Hercules), Central (Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Concord, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda, plus San Ramon and Danville farther south) and East (Pittsburg, Antioch, Oakley, Brentwood). Caregivers tend to stay within one of those, so a post for a Brentwood address mostly reaches people already in East County. If your parent lives somewhere more remote, offering mileage or fewer, longer shifts widens the pool.

Many households here speak a language other than English: 37.5% of residents five and older, including 19.1% who speak Spanish (ACS 2020–2024). State your relative's preferred language in the post. The caregiver list on this page is ordered by how far each person is from the ZIP code typed in, and it grows as people join; type your relative's code rather than yours.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Contra Costa County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Contra Costa County

Begin with credentials you can confirm. A provider enrolled with Contra Costa IHSS has attended orientation and cleared a Department of Justice Live Scan check; a registry provider has also had a face-to-face interview and reference checks at the Public Authority. Aides that a licensed agency sends out must be listed on the state registry; independent caregivers can sign up too. Nursing assistants hold CDPH certification, and Mt. Diablo Adult Education in Concord trains them locally. Then ring two former employers, include your relative in the conversation, and book one paid trial shift before fixing a schedule. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens applicants; a background report, ordered with the candidate's written consent, is your own step.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • From which part of the county would you be coming, and what is that drive like at 8 a.m.?
  • Which hospitals have past clients of yours come home from: John Muir, Kaiser, Sutter Delta or Contra Costa Regional?
  • Are you enrolled with Contra Costa IHSS, on the Public Authority registry, or CDPH-certified?
  • If my mother switches to Spanish when she is tired or confused, can you follow her?
  • Would you ride LINK or Tri Delta paratransit with my father, or drive him and charge mileage?
  • What would you do if my parent fell while you were alone with them?
  • Do you charge the same hourly rate for evenings and weekends?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Four numbers frame a private rate: the $16.90 state minimum, the $17.28 metro aide median, the $20.03 that Contra Costa IHSS pays, and CareScout's $40 statewide median for agency home care. A direct hire usually lands between the IHSS and agency figures. If your relative lives in Richmond or El Cerrito, the city minimum ($19.18 and $18.82 since January 1, 2026, per UC Berkeley's Labor Center) is the floor businesses there must pay. Medi-Cal members who are older, blind or disabled can be assessed for IHSS by calling (925) 229-8434, which is worth doing before you budget private hours. Past 9 hours on any day, or 45 in a week, state law entitles personal attendants to overtime.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Contra Costa County: frequently asked questions

How does my parent apply for IHSS in Contra Costa?

Call (925) 229-8434; nobody needs to visit an office. Once the doctor returns the SOC 873 health certification, a county social worker comes to the home, assesses what help is needed and decides how many hours a month to approve.

Can the county help us find an IHSS caregiver?

Yes, after approval. The Public Authority registry gives recipients a list of three to six providers who fit their needs; you call them, interview, and choose. Family members and friends can also be enrolled as the provider.

Who can I call for general help as a family caregiver?

The county Information & Assistance line, (800) 510-2020, weekdays 8 to 5. Its social workers point callers to caregiver support groups, adult day care for respite and in-home help, and they follow up afterward.

Is there adult day care for a parent with dementia?

Choice in Aging runs two adult day health centers listed by the state: Mt. Diablo Center in Pleasant Hill and The Bedford Center in Antioch. Call either one to ask who qualifies and what a day costs.

Does CaregiverConnect screen the caregivers?

No. The platform runs no background or reference checks, so you handle the profile review, reference calls and any screening yourself. A post costs nothing; paying $24.99 a month for Family Premium unlocks messaging and hire confirmation.

My father lives in Brentwood. Will someone travel there?

Use his Brentwood ZIP code, which puts the post in front of East County caregivers, and mention any mileage you will pay. Longer shifts are more attractive to people driving in from Antioch or Pittsburg.
