How to find an in-home caregiver in San Ramon

Start with a free posting under 94582 or 94583 that says what your parent needs help with, which days and hours, and whether the caregiver must drive. Caregivers whose travel area includes your address can apply, and nearby caregivers' profiles appear here when they register. An applicant could live in San Ramon itself or commute from Dublin, Pleasanton or elsewhere in Contra Costa; ask about the drive and whether it is realistic for your start time.

Language and routine are worth spelling out. The ACS 2020–2024 survey recorded 46.8% of San Ramon residents over the age of four speaking another language than English in the home, 26.0% of whom said their English was less than very well. If your father is more comfortable in his first language, say which one. Mention the senior center classes or lunch he goes to, any special diet, stairs in the house, a walker or wheelchair, and whether he has recently come home from San Ramon Regional Medical Center or another hospital.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in San Ramon

Three credentials can be checked in Contra Costa. An applicant already working as an IHSS provider has cleared a Department of Justice background check through Live Scan and attended county orientation; one listed on the Public Authority registry has also passed an in-person interview and reference calls. Only staff of licensed home care agencies must carry a Home Care Aide Registry number. CNA status means CDPH certification following an approved course and exam. Whatever the paperwork, phone at least two past clients or employers, have your parent meet the person, get written consent before ordering a background report, and start with a paid trial shift. Background checks and vetting are not something CaregiverConnect does.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where would you be driving from, and how long does that take you on a weekday morning?
  • Have you helped someone in the first weeks after a discharge from San Ramon Regional Medical Center or a Kaiser hospital? What did you do each day?
  • My mother takes classes at the Alcosta Senior and Community Center. Could you take her, stay nearby and bring her home?
  • Which languages do you speak, and could you hold a full conversation with my father in his?
  • Are you enrolled as a Contra Costa IHSS provider, and may I see your provider number?
  • If someone with dementia keeps trying to walk out of the front door, what do you do?
  • What is your hourly rate for weekdays, and does it change for nights or weekends?

What in-home care costs in San Ramon: hourly rates and schedules

Typical San Ramon requests: four to eight weekday hours while adult children work, sometimes from home in another room; morning visits to help with the shower and getting dressed; trips to doctors and to the Alcosta center; overnight cover after surgery; and live-in arrangements for advanced dementia. About a third of employed San Ramon residents worked from home in the ACS figures, so some households look for a caregiver who can keep a parent company and busy while a relative works nearby in the house.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

San Ramon has not passed its own minimum wage, so the state $16.90 an hour applies. In practice private rates start well above that: Contra Costa pays IHSS providers $20.03 an hour, the May 2025 BLS survey had aides in the five-county metro at a $17.28 median, and CareScout found a $40 California median for agency care. Expect to pay more for dementia care, nights, weekends and driving. Hire a personal attendant directly and California requires overtime once a shift goes past nine hours or a week past 45. For a parent on Medi-Cal, the county IHSS line is (925) 229-8434; a social worker visits the home to assess hours, and the provider can be someone you choose, including a relative.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
