How to find an in-home caregiver in San Leandro
Write a free post tied to your parent's San Leandro ZIP code, saying what help is needed, on which days and for how long. Caregivers whose radius covers the address may apply, and nearby profiles are listed above as they sign up. Expect applicants from San Leandro and from Oakland, Hayward, San Lorenzo and Castro Valley; ask each how they get to you and whether they can drive your parent.
Many families here arrange care from a distance. ACS 2020–2024 counts 3,727 San Leandro households made up of one person 65 or older, and 8.9% of households have no car. If your mother lives alone in the house she has owned for decades, say so, and list the jobs that matter: medication reminders, getting groceries in, a lift to Kaiser on Merced Street or to San Leandro Hospital, company in the afternoon. If she is more comfortable in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese or Tagalog, put that in the opening line.

Evaluating caregivers in San Leandro
Credentials you can check: county IHSS enrollment, which tells you the person signed up with the Public Authority and cleared DOJ fingerprinting; a listing on the state aide registry, compulsory only for agency staff; and a CDPH nurse assistant certificate for anyone who will handle nursing-type tasks. Confirm whichever the applicant claims, call two previous employers, have your parent sit in on the interview, collect written consent for any background report and start with a paid trial. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens or background-checks the people who apply.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Where are you coming from, and can you use your own car to take my mother to appointments?
- Have you looked after someone recovering after Kaiser San Leandro or San Leandro Hospital?
- Which languages do you speak, and would my father be comfortable chatting with you all afternoon?
- Is there a certificate, registry listing or IHSS enrollment of yours that I can look up?
- Would you go with Mom to lunch at the Senior Community Center on East 14th Street?
- How do you keep track of medications for someone who lives alone?
- If you found Dad on the floor when you let yourself in, what would you do first?
- What is your hourly rate, and is a short two-hour visit priced differently?

| Employed aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Alameda County | $22.10 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
San Leandro has no local minimum above the state level, so $16.90 is the legal floor in 2026. That figure is not a realistic offer, though: Alameda County pays IHSS providers $22.10 an hour, BLS put the metro aide median at $17.28 in May 2025, and neighboring Hayward requires large employers to pay $17.79. CareScout puts the California agency median at $40. A direct hire usually lands above the county IHSS figure and below agency pricing, more for dementia, nights or driving. California makes overtime payable to personal attendants for hours beyond nine on a single day or 45 during the week. If your parent has Medi-Cal, call (510) 577-1800 about IHSS, which can pay a caregiver of your choosing, even a family member.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
