How to find an in-home caregiver in Fremont

Begin by posting, at no cost, under the Fremont ZIP code where your parent lives; name the tasks, the hours and the language your parent is most comfortable in. Caregivers whose travel radius covers the address can apply, and nearby profiles show on this page as they join. Applicants may come from Fremont itself or from Newark, Union City, Hayward and Milpitas, so ask each one how they would get to you at the start time you need.

Be precise about language and food, because in Fremont they decide whether a match works. ACS 2020–2024 found that 64.2% of Fremont residents aged five and up mainly use another language at home rather than English, and 30.9% of that group speak English less than very well. A grandmother who speaks only Punjabi, a grandfather who eats a strict vegetarian diet, or a parent who follows a particular faith calendar: put it in the post, along with whether the home has stairs, whether a walker or wheelchair is used, and which hospital or clinic your parent uses.

Evaluating caregivers in Fremont

Ask which of these a Fremont applicant holds, then check it. Someone already working as an Alameda County IHSS provider has gone through Public Authority enrollment, orientation and a Department of Justice background check. A Home Care Aide Registry number is required only when a licensed agency employs the aide. A CNA certificate is issued by CDPH after a state-approved course and exam. Beyond paperwork, call two former employers, let your parent meet the applicant, get written consent before running any background report, and pay for a trial shift or two first. CaregiverConnect does not screen or vet caregivers; that part is up to you.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • From which part of the Tri-City area would you commute, and how long is it at 8 am?
  • Tell me about a client you supported after Washington Hospital or Kaiser Fremont sent them home. What did the first week involve?
  • Which languages can you speak with my mother, and how fluently?
  • Can you cook vegetarian meals the way our family does?
  • Which credentials can I verify: an IHSS enrollment, CNA certification or aide registry listing?
  • Dad enjoys the Age Well Center on Paseo Padre Parkway. Could you take him to a class there and wait?
  • How do you handle a parent with dementia who refuses to shower?
  • What do you charge for weekday hours compared with nights and weekends?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Fremont: hourly rates and schedules

Common Fremont arrangements: weekday daytime cover from about 8 am to 6 pm while both adult children are at work; a few mornings a week for bathing and dressing; a live-in or overnight caregiver for someone with advanced dementia; and short, frequent visits for the first weeks after a hospital discharge. Families with a parent who attends Age Well Center classes sometimes book a caregiver only for the drive and the hours around them.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Fremont sets its own minimum wage: $18.05 an hour since July 1, 2026, adjusted each July. Agencies and other for-profit employers in the city must pay at least that; nonprofit employers are exempt. Even if the ordinance does not reach your household, applicants know the figure, and Alameda County pays IHSS providers $22.10, so expect private rates to start near the IHSS level and rise toward the $40 CareScout agency median for dementia care, nights or driving. Under California domestic worker rules, a personal attendant earns overtime beyond a ninth daily hour or a 45th weekly hour. For a parent eligible for Medi-Cal, request IHSS on (510) 577-1800; the hours it approves can fund a helper you select, relatives included.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
