Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Fremont
Fremont is a large, spread-out city at the south end of Alameda County: the state put its population at 233,974 on January 1, 2026, stretching from the hills above Mission Boulevard to the bay shore and the Santa Clara County line. Private care requests here tend to come from adult children who work long hours and want reliable help for a parent who has moved in with them or lives a few streets away. In the ACS 2020–2024 survey, 21,480 Fremont households (27.5%) included someone 65 or older, and 5,327 households were an older person living alone. Families publish under ZIP codes 94536, 94538, 94539 and 94555, and the postings above refresh as they do.
Language is the strongest selling point you can put in a Fremont profile. ACS data put 64.2% of Fremont residents aged five-plus in homes where English is not the main language spoken, and 86.3% of the foreign-born population was born in Asia. The city prints its wage poster in Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese, which gives a fair picture of the households you may meet. If you speak Mandarin, Hindi, Punjabi, Farsi, Tagalog, Vietnamese or Spanish, say so in the first line, and mention any vegetarian or regional cooking you can manage. Driving matters too: working residents average 30.3 minutes each way to their jobs, so state where you start from and how far you will travel.

Types of caregiver jobs in Fremont
Typical Fremont requests: daytime company and meals for a grandparent while the household is at work, help with bathing and dressing for someone with limited mobility, rides to Washington Hospital or Kaiser clinics, overnight cover after a fall, and dementia supervision. With no paid experience yet, companionship and errands for a healthy older adult are the usual first step, and a short caregiver course such as the one at New Haven Adult School in Union City adds hands-on transfer and CPR practice.

Caregiver pay in Fremont: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties) | $17.28 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 119,120 jobs; concentration 1.81× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Alameda County | $22.10 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Inside city limits the legal floor is $18.05 an hour, up from $17.75, since July 1, 2026, and the city adjusts it each July by a local consumer price index. That is $1.15 above the state rate and 77 cents above the $17.28 median BLS reported for aides across the five-county metro in May 2025. One exception matters to caregivers: the Fremont ordinance exempts employees of nonprofit corporations, so a nonprofit home care program may legally pay the state minimum instead. The county IHSS rate of $22.10 since July 1, 2026 is higher than either, which is why many Fremont caregivers combine IHSS hours for one client with private shifts for another. The ordinance text we read speaks of employers and work sites, not households; if a family hires you directly and you are unsure whether the city rate covers you, ask the California Labor Commissioner, whose Oakland office the city points workers to.
How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Fremont
California rules apply unchanged in Fremont. Non-medical help that you arrange yourself with a family needs no license, and joining the state Home Care Aide Registry is optional unless a licensed home care agency employs you. Becoming an IHSS provider means signing up with the county Public Authority, which is based in Oakland (main line (510) 577-3552) and runs provider training and a registry that matches DOJ-cleared providers with recipients. For skilled nursing duties, or a job inside a nursing facility, you would first need CDPH certification as a nurse assistant. California also treats paid caregivers as mandated reporters: suspected harm to an older or dependent adult in Fremont is reported to county Adult Protective Services on (510) 577-3500. The California requirements guide has the full detail.

Fremont in numbers
ACS 2020–2024 counts 32,036 Fremont residents aged 65 and over, 14.0% of the city, including 4,360 who are 85 or older; the median age is 39.1. Among residents 65 and up, 27.5% report a disability.
