Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Union City

Union City, an Alameda County city, had 66,665 residents on January 1, 2026 by the state count. Its population is older and lives in larger households than Dublin's or San Ramon's: the ACS 2020–2024 estimates show 8,203 households, 38.6% of the total, with at least one person aged 65 or over, an average household of 3.1 people, and 31.2% of households receiving Social Security. Expect many requests from families who share a house with a parent or grandparent and need someone for the hours they are out, and 1,567 older residents living alone add a second group needing check-ins and errands. Families post under ZIP code 94587; the postings above update as new ones arrive.

Put languages at the top of your profile. In the same survey 63.1% of Union City residents five or older used another language at home instead of English, and 39.9% of those spoke English less than very well. Spanish was spoken at home by 13.5% of residents, and most people born abroad (80.5%) came from Asia, with another 12.7% from Latin America. Name every language you can work in, Spanish included, and say how fluently. Working residents averaged 31.9 minutes to their jobs, and only 18.6% worked from home, so many clients are on their own during the day.

Local requests tend to be daytime company and meals for a parent while the household works, bathing and dressing help, medication reminders, rides to clinic visits, and overnight cover after a hospital stay. If you are starting out, companionship and errands for a fairly independent senior are realistic first jobs, and finishing the New Haven Adult School caregiver course with its CPR day gives you something concrete to show families.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Union City: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Union City has not adopted a local minimum wage; the Labor Center at UC Berkeley, which tracks every local ordinance, lists none for it, leaving the state $16.90 in force. Fremont and Hayward do appear in that inventory with ordinances of their own, so the legal floor depends on which city the job is in. Alameda County IHSS pays $22.10 an hour from July 1, 2026, which is $4.82 above the $17.28 BLS metro median for aides in May 2025, so IHSS hours are often the best-paid hours a Union City caregiver can find. Long shifts carry overtime for personal attendants under California's domestic worker law for any time over nine hours on one day, or over 45 across seven days.

How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Union City

Union City adds nothing to California rules. Non-medical care arranged directly with a family requires no license, and you only have to join the Home Care Aide Registry when a licensed agency puts you on its payroll. IHSS providers for Union City recipients go through the countywide Public Authority, reached on (510) 577-3552, and must pass a Department of Justice background check before they can join its registry, which needs no prior experience. CDPH certification as a nurse assistant is needed for facility or skilled nursing work. As a caregiver you are a mandated reporter: any concern goes to the county's Adult Protective Services line, (510) 577-3500, or toll-free 1-866-CALL-APS. See the California requirements guide and the Alameda County IHSS guide.
