Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Redwood City

The state's January 2026 count for Redwood City was 81,809 residents. The city skews younger than the county around it, with a median age of 37.5 and 13.8% of residents 65 or older (ACS 2020–2024), but that still means 11,387 older people and 1,543 aged 85 or over, and a quarter of local households include someone past 65. Work here often follows a hospital stay. Sequoia Hospital on Alameda de las Pulgas and Kaiser Permanente's Redwood City hospital on Veterans Boulevard are both inside city limits, so expect requests for a few weeks of help after surgery as well as long-term weekday care for a parent living alone.

Spanish is the language that comes up most: 28.3% of people here aged five or older speak it at home, and 12.0% are Spanish speakers who use English less than very well, a much higher share than the county as a whole. Spanish speakers should lead with it in their profile. The city also stretches across Highway 101 to Redwood Shores, which sits apart from downtown, and the unincorporated community of North Fair Oaks borders it to the southeast; name the neighborhoods you can reach so families on both sides know whether you will come.

Newcomers usually start with companionship, errands and light housekeeping; families want references or a nurse assistant certificate before handing over hands-on personal care or dementia support, which the free course in neighboring Menlo Park prepares you for in eleven weeks plus exam review.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Redwood City: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Redwood City's minimum went from $18.20 to $18.65 on January 1, 2026. The city raises it each January in line with the consumer price index, measured August to August, and it never goes down. According to the city, every business that operates in Redwood City must pay it for each hour worked inside the city to anyone working there two or more hours a week, so an agency that places you with a client inside city limits owes at least $18.65 for those hours. Whether a private household that hires you directly counts as such a business is something to ask Redwood City's City Manager's Office on (650) 780-7300. For comparison, BLS puts the five-county aide median at $17.28, the state minimum $16.90 and the San Mateo County IHSS rate $21.70, the highest of the four and a sensible floor for private negotiations.

How to enroll as a provider in San Mateo County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Mateo County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Redwood City

Redwood City adds no caregiver license of its own; state rules apply. You need no license for non-medical help that a family pays you for directly, and joining the Home Care Aide Registry ($35 for two years) is optional unless an agency employs you. To work through IHSS you sign up with the San Mateo County IHSS Public Authority, (2000 Alameda de las Pulgas, Suite 200, in the city of San Mateo): an enrollment packet, an original Social Security card, photo ID, the orientation video and a background check. Nursing homes and hospitals such as Sequoia want a CDPH nurse assistant certificate. Under state law you are also a mandated reporter; the county's abuse line for older and dependent adults is 844-868-0938, and the long-term care ombudsman for residents of care facilities is based at AgeUp on Madison Avenue. More in the California requirements guide and the San Mateo County IHSS guide.

Housing costs set the tone. ACS 2020–2024 puts the median owner-occupied home at $1,801,700 and median gross rent at $2,968, against a median household income of $157,814; 51.4% of homes are rented, and 26.7% of working residents worked from home. A third of residents (32.9%) were born outside the United States. For a caregiver that combination usually means clients who can pay privately, adult children who work long hours nearby or from home, and a commute in from somewhere cheaper. Highway 101, El Camino Real (Route 82), Woodside Road (Route 84) and Interstate 280 all pass through or beside the city, and it has a Caltrain stop and SamTrans buses.

HCAI lists Sequoia Hospital at 170 Alameda de las Pulgas with 184 licensed beds and Kaiser Foundation Hospital Redwood City at 1100 Veterans Blvd. with 153. Nearby pages: San Mateo, Palo Alto and the San Mateo County hub.
