Finding in-home caregiver jobs in South San Francisco

South San Francisco is a city of 65,239 residents (California Department of Finance, January 2026) in northern San Mateo County, and private care here is mostly arranged household by household. Of the city's 21,838 households, 8,163 include a resident 65 or older, and the average household has 2.90 members, so a caregiver often works in a home where adult children are present in the mornings and evenings. Requests that come up in a city like this: weekday hours while relatives are at work, help with bathing and dressing, company for a parent who lives alone, and short stretches of support after a stay at the Kaiser hospital on El Camino Real. Families in the 94080 ZIP code post on the board above, and that list changes as new postings go live.

Lead your profile with the languages you speak. At home, a language besides English is used by 53.8% of residents aged five and up. Spanish leads with 12,777 speakers, then Tagalog with 8,070 and Chinese with 7,026, and in each group thousands rate their own English below "very well" (5,724, 2,414 and 3,405). There are also 1,027 Arabic speakers. Then say how you travel. South San Francisco BART station is at 1333 Mission Road, and the city runs a free weekday shuttle on three routes that stop at senior centers, Kaiser and downtown and connect with SamTrans, BART and Caltrain. If you rely on that shuttle, name the routes or neighborhoods you can reach.

Caregiver pay in South San Francisco: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

South San Francisco's minimum wage has been $18.15 an hour since January 1, 2026, $1.25 above the $16.90 state rate shown here. Chapter 8.71 of the municipal code, adopted in 2019, started the rate at $15 in January 2020 and raises it each January by the August-to-August change in the San Francisco–Oakland–San Jose consumer price index. The chapter's definition of an employer includes a natural person who employs anyone, and it covers a worker who puts in at least two hours during a calendar week within city limits and is owed the state minimum wage; it does not carve out households. Read that way, a family paying you directly for work in South San Francisco owes at least $18.15, and so does an agency that places you here. Employers cannot count tips toward it. A "learner" may be paid 85% of the rate for the first 160 hours. Complaints go to the City Manager's Office at 400 Grand Avenue, 2nd floor, (650) 877-8502 or MinimumWage@ssfca.gov, and are kept confidential. San Mateo County IHSS pays more again: $21.70, against a $17.28 BLS median for aides across the metro.

How to enroll as a provider in San Mateo County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS San Mateo County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to South San Francisco

State rules apply in South San Francisco without local changes. A caregiver giving non-medical help in a private home does not need a state license. Whether to join California's Home Care Aide Registry is your call as an independent, though any licensed home care agency that hires you will expect it. For IHSS, the recipient chooses you and you enroll with San Mateo County, whose IHSS office is at 2000 Alameda de las Pulgas Avenue, Suite 200, in San Mateo; provider enrollment starts with a voicemail to (833) 650-2272 and includes an orientation and a background check. Hospitals and nursing homes hire certified nurse assistants. The law makes paid caregivers mandated reporters, so harm you suspect against a South San Francisco elder or dependent adult must be reported; San Mateo County takes those calls at 844-868-0938 at all hours. For statewide rules see the California caregiver requirements guide; enrollment steps are in our San Mateo County IHSS guide.
