Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Leandro

San Leandro is a compact city of 87,431 people (state estimate, January 1, 2026) between Oakland and Hayward, and its age profile shapes the work. ACS 2020–2024 counts 16,601 residents aged 65 or older, 18.9% of the city, and 37.2% of households include at least one person in that age group. 3,727 households are an older person living on their own. Requests from those homes often come from a son or daughter in another Bay Area city who wants someone to check in, cook and drive. Postings use ZIP codes 94577, 94578 and 94579 and appear above as families publish them.

A car is a real advantage here, and so is a second language. 8.9% of San Leandro households have no vehicle, more than in Fremont or Hayward, so clients often rely on the city FLEX RIDES shuttle, East Bay Paratransit or the caregiver. More than half of residents five and older (54.5%) use a home language besides English, 21.2% speak Spanish, and Asian residents make up 35.8% of the population. Put your languages, your car and the hours you can cover at the top of your profile.

Types of caregiver jobs in San Leandro

Look for companion and housekeeping visits for someone living alone, personal care mornings, escorts to medical appointments, overnight cover, and recovery help after a stay at Kaiser San Leandro or San Leandro Hospital. New caregivers usually start with companionship, errands and meal preparation; a CPR card and a short caregiver course make you a stronger applicant for hands-on care.

Pay

Caregiver pay in San Leandro: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

IHSS provider wage, Alameda County$22.10CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Unlike Fremont and Hayward, San Leandro has no local wage above the state figure. The city ordinance has not been repealed, but the UC Berkeley Labor Center notes that the state minimum has overtaken it, so $16.90 is the floor in 2026. That makes the county IHSS rate, $22.10 since July 1, 2026, the strongest benchmark in town: more than five dollars above the legal minimum and well above the $17.28 BLS median for aides across the metro in May 2025. Use it as a reference point when you set a private rate. If an agency of 26 or more staff sends you across the line to a Hayward client, Hayward law requires at least $17.79 for those hours, so note where each shift takes place.

How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Leandro

State rules apply in San Leandro without local additions. A caregiver hired straight by a San Leandro family for non-medical help holds no license; only aides on a licensed agency payroll must appear on the Home Care Aide Registry. Would-be IHSS providers register with the Oakland-based county Public Authority, (510) 577-3552, sit through orientation and a Department of Justice background check, and can then join its provider registry. Work involving nursing tasks, or in a skilled nursing facility, needs a CDPH nurse assistant certificate. State law obliges you to report suspected abuse of an elder or dependent adult; the county APS hotline is (510) 577-3500 or 1-866-CALL-APS. More detail is in the California requirements guide.
