Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Hayward

Hayward sits in the middle of Alameda County, between San Leandro and Union City, and the county runs its Adult and Aging Services department from an office on Foothill Boulevard here. The state counted 161,557 residents on January 1, 2026. Households are big, averaging 3.10 people in ACS 2020–2024, and 31.0% of them include someone aged 65 or older, so a typical private request comes from a working family who shares a home with a parent or grandparent and needs help on weekdays. ZIP codes 94541, 94542, 94544 and 94545 cover the city; postings from them appear above once a family publishes.

Bilingual caregivers have an edge here. ACS finds 32.8% of residents aged five and up speaking Spanish at home and 61.8% speaking some language other than English; of the foreign-born population, 48.0% were born in Asia and 42.7% in Latin America. Pacific Islanders make up 2.9% of residents, and Black residents 7.6%. Put every language you speak near the top of your profile, say whether you can cook familiar dishes, and note whether you drive: working residents average 32.3 minutes each way, and 5.6% of households have no vehicle at all.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Hayward: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Hayward splits its minimum wage by employer size. Since January 1, 2026, a business with 26 or more employees, counting staff who work outside the city, must pay $17.79 an hour for work done in Hayward; smaller firms (25 or fewer) owe the state $16.90. The city has already published the 2027 figures: $18.39 for large employers and $17.40 for small ones from January 1, 2027. Nonprofits are not exempt, and the rate covers any worker spending at least two hours weekly on the job in Hayward, so a home care agency of 26 or more staff sending you to a Hayward client owes the higher figure. Alameda County IHSS pays $22.10 since July 1, 2026, well above the $17.28 metro aide median from BLS. Questions go to the city Economic Development Office, (510) 583-5540 or MinimumWage@hayward-ca.gov.

How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Hayward

Hayward follows state rules. Caring for a client you found yourself, without nursing tasks, requires no license; agency aides must be listed on the Home Care Aide Registry, which is voluntary for independents. The county IHSS program signs up its providers via the Public Authority office at 6955 Foothill Boulevard in Oakland ((510) 577-3552); once you clear the DOJ check you can join its provider registry on (510) 577-5694 to be matched with Hayward recipients. Skilled nursing facilities and medical tasks call for a nurse assistant certificate from CDPH. California law makes you a mandated reporter: suspected abuse of an elder or dependent adult goes to Alameda County Adult Protective Services, (510) 577-3500. See the California caregiver requirements guide.

Hayward in numbers

ACS 2020–2024 counts 22,896 Hayward residents aged 65 or older, 14.4% of the population, with 3,145 aged 85 and up; the median resident is 38.6 years old. Of those 65 and over, 35.4% report a disability, a higher share than in Fremont, and 3,390 households are an older person living alone. Median household income is $113,318, median gross rent $2,391, and 42.0% of homes are rented. Fewer residents work from home (13.9%), so in many households no adult is around during the day.

St. Rose Hospital, 27200 Calaroga Avenue, is open and licensed for 155 beds (HCAI); it now describes itself as an Alameda Health System affiliate, suspended labor and delivery in February 2025, and is preparing a subacute unit. Patients going home from there or from hospitals in neighboring cities create short-term requests. Nearby: San Leandro, Fremont, Oakland and Pleasanton.
