Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Alameda County

Alameda County splits into three parts for anyone who drives to clients. The north county, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Alameda, Albany and Piedmont, is AC Transit and BART territory, and the place where a caregiver without a car has the most options. The south county along Interstate 880 runs from San Leandro and the unincorporated communities of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo through Hayward, Union City, Newark and Fremont. East of the hills, the Tri-Valley cities of Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore have their own bus system, Wheels, and much longer distances between homes.

Set your profile around that. Give the ZIP code you leave from and a radius you would actually cover at rush hour; a caregiver in Hayward who ticks a wide radius is telling Berkeley families she will cross the whole I-880 corridor. Name your languages near the top. In the 2020–2024 ACS, 47.2% of county residents past their fifth birthday report a home language besides English, with Spanish at 16.7%, and more than a third of residents were born abroad, most of them in Asia. Say too whether you hold a California driver's license and can drive a client to appointments, since one household in ten in the county has no vehicle.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Alameda County

Typical requests: morning bathing and dressing, meals and medication reminders for a parent living alone, rides to clinic days, overnight cover after a hospital stay, and regular hours with a person living with dementia so the spouse can rest. If you are new to paid care, the realistic first jobs are companionship, errands, cooking and light housework. The Public Authority's free 24-hour provider class and its CPR course are a sensible next step before you take on lifting and personal care.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Alameda County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties)$17.28 median ($18.66 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 119,120 jobs; concentration 1.81× national
IHSS provider wage, Alameda County$22.10CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties)$26.96 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Wage floors differ from one city line to the next. UC Berkeley's Labor Center lists Emeryville at $20.34, Berkeley at $19.61, Fremont at $18.05 and the City of Alameda at $17.76, all from July 1, 2026; Hayward at $17.79 since January 1 ($16.90 for its small employers); and Oakland at $17.34 since January 1. San Leandro's ordinance has been overtaken by the state rate, and the inventory has nothing for Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, Newark, Union City or unincorporated land, where California's $16.90 applies. Aides across the five-county metro had a $17.28 median wage in May 2025, and the county's $22.10 IHSS rate is above every city minimum. The table does not address household employers, so check with the city before counting on a local rate for private work.

How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Alameda County

Paid directly by a household for non-nursing help, you need no state license. A $35 listing with the state's aide registry becomes compulsory only if a licensed agency hires you; independents can opt in. To be paid by IHSS in this county you complete enrollment with the county's Adult and Aging Services department: a one-and-a-half-hour IHSS orientation, a signed provider enrollment agreement, Department of Justice Live Scan fingerprinting, and two IDs, such as a driver's license and a Social Security card, with matching names. The Public Authority for IHSS, at 6955 Foothill Blvd., Suite 143, Oakland, adds its own application (form PA12) and workshop for its referral registry. State law makes caregivers mandated reporters; Alameda County Adult Protective Services takes reports at any hour on (510) 577-3500. Statewide rules sit in the requirements guide and the county steps in the Alameda County IHSS guide.

Alameda County in numbers

The Department of Finance counted 1,666,136 residents on January 1, 2026, 148,265 of them outside any city. The ACS 2020–2024 puts 15.4% of residents at 65 or older, 254,161 people, with 31,209 aged 85 and up, and 55,722 one-person households headed by someone 65-plus. Median household income is $129,367 and median gross rent $2,357, so many caregivers live in the less expensive flatland and I-880 neighborhoods and commute to clients in the hills or the Tri-Valley.

Discharges drive much of the short-term work. HCAI lists Washington Hospital in Fremont at 415 licensed beds, the Alta Bates campus in Berkeley at 339, Kaiser's Oakland hospital at 315 (licensed together with Richmond), Alta Bates Summit in Oakland at 309 and Kaiser San Leandro at 216; Highland, St. Rose, Eden and Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley serve Oakland, Hayward, Castro Valley and Pleasanton. Neighboring markets: Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County and San Francisco.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Alameda County: frequently asked questions

Which Alameda County cities have their own page?

Oakland, Fremont, Hayward, Berkeley, San Leandro, Livermore and Pleasanton. Caregivers in Alameda, Emeryville, Union City, Newark, Dublin, Albany, Piedmont, Castro Valley or San Lorenzo can rely on this hub and enter a home ZIP code.

How much does IHSS pay in Alameda County?

$22.10 an hour for individual providers, effective July 1, 2026, according to the state wage table. Payroll questions go to the county IHSS payroll line, (510) 577-1877.

Do I need to join the Public Authority registry to work for IHSS?

No. Anyone who has completed the county orientation and passed the DOJ background check can be hired by a recipient. The registry is an optional referral list, and being on it does not guarantee hours.

Can IHSS providers here get health insurance?

Yes, if you are paid for at least 80 hours a month. You need 160 paid hours over two consecutive months to qualify, and coverage may take up to 90 days to start.

Should I list the Tri-Valley and Oakland on one profile?

Only if you are ready to cross the hills between the Tri-Valley and the bay side on every shift. Most caregivers pick one side of the county and widen their radius only for longer or live-in jobs.

Where do families in the county post?

On the Alameda County family page or their own city page; postings from all of them appear above.
