Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Alameda

Alameda has a long list of care employers inside its own limits. The state health facility list (data date October 16, 2026) shows seven skilled nursing facilities in 94501 with 700 licensed beds between them. Three sit on Willow Street: Bay View Rehabilitation Hospital (170 beds), Alameda Healthcare & Wellness Center (166) and South Shore Convalescent (26), a unit of Alameda Hospital. West Shore Post Acute on Westline Drive has 151 beds, Park Bridge Rehabilitation and Wellness Center on Blanding Avenue 120, Marina Garden Nursing Center on Fernside Boulevard 32, and the hospital keeps a 35-bed skilled nursing unit at its Clinton Avenue building. The same list puts seven home health agencies and four hospices at Alameda addresses, most of them on Marina Village Parkway or Harbor Bay Parkway.

Non-medical work is the other route in. The state's community care file (May 2025) lists ten licensed home care organizations with an Alameda address, among them FirstLight Home Care of Alameda, Visiting Angels, Home Care Pros, Premier Homecare Angels and Alice Home Care, plus seven licensed elderly care homes (RCFEs), the largest being Cardinal Point at Mariner Square (153 beds), Waters Edge Lodge (120) and Oakmont of Mariner Point (80). Private households fill in the rest. In your profile, state your home ZIP, how you get around, and each language you could use through a whole shift. ACS 2020–2024 finds a language besides English in the homes of 34.5% of residents aged five and up. The biggest share, 19.6%, speaks an Asian or Pacific Island language, with Spanish at 7.1% and other Indo-European languages at 6.5%.

Typical requests involve an older parent who still lives at home: help with a morning shower and dressing, lunch and pill reminders, a ride to a medical appointment, and evening or overnight cover in the weeks after a stay at Alameda Hospital or one of the Willow Street rehabilitation centers. With 2,231 residents aged 85 or older in the ACS, some families want long days and help with transfers. If you are new to paid work, start with company, shopping and meals, or get supervised hours at a licensed agency with an Alameda office.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Alameda: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont, CA metro (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Marin counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

About 4.7% of Alameda's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. That is slightly higher than Alameda County's 4.5% and lower than California's 5.3%. The labor force averaged about 40,200, the monthly figure ranged from 4.0% to 5.2%. Pay floors matter more to a caregiver. Under Municipal Code Chapter 4-60, the City of Alameda requires $17.76 an hour from July 1, 2026 for any employee who performs at least two hours of work in a given week within city boundaries, with no exemption by employer size; the rate is adjusted each July 1 for cost of living, capped at 5% a year. The notice is silent on workers hired directly by a household, so ask the city on 510-747-6859 if that is your case.

IHSS pays above the city floor. The county wage table gives Alameda County providers $22.10, effective July 1, 2026, and the rate depends on where the person receiving care lives; the Alameda County IHSS guide covers enrollment. The BLS median of $17.28 describes aides across a five-county metro, not this city alone. A family that employs you as a personal attendant must pay time-and-a-half for hours beyond 9 on a single day or 45 in a single week, under the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.

How to enroll as a provider in Alameda County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Alameda County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Alameda

Bathing, meals, errands and company for an Alameda household that pays you directly need no state license. If one of the ten licensed home care organizations in town hires you, it must first enter you in California's Home Care Aide Registry ($35 to apply). Jobs at the nursing facilities on Willow Street, Westline Drive and Blanding Avenue, and aide visits for the home health agencies, normally require a nurse assistant or home health aide certificate from CDPH. IHSS enrollment goes through the county and its Public Authority; the orientation, Live Scan and registry steps are on the Alameda County page. If you suspect that an older or dependent adult in your care is being harmed, California law makes reporting it your duty; the county APS line, 1-866-CALL-APS or (510) 577-3500, is answered around the clock. Statewide rules are collected in the requirements guide.

Alameda in numbers

ACS 2020–2024 puts 13,824 Alameda residents (17.9%) at age 65 or above; half the city is older than 41.0. In 9,422 of the city's 29,988 households (31.4%) at least one member is 65-plus, and 2,457 of the 3,411 older residents living by themselves are women. Among people 65 and up outside institutions, 28.8% report a disability. Incomes and rents run high: a $137,697 median household income, a $2,474 median gross rent, and 49.3% of homes rented. Only 44.2% of workers drive to work alone and 10.0% ride transit, so some clients will count on you to drive them. About 1,280 people live in group quarters, under 2% of the total, so these figures mainly describe private households.

Alameda Hospital, at 2070 Clinton Avenue and listed among Alameda Health System's locations, holds 101 licensed beds in HCAI's profile and runs a basic emergency department; Discharges from there and from Willow Street create short jobs that can turn into regular hours. Yes. Since July 1, 2026, Alameda County IHSS providers are paid $22.10 an hour, $4.34 more than the city rate. A client living in Oakland or San Leandro is also in Alameda County, so the IHSS wage is the same there.

On the Alameda family page, and the same requests appear in the postings above. Caregivers join free and owe no commission on what a family pays.
