How to find an in-home caregiver in Alameda
Start with the address. A request tagged 94501 or 94502 reaches caregivers who already live in the City of Alameda and those who commute in from nearby cities, and the list of profiles on this page is sorted by distance from the ZIP you enter, so use your parent's, not your own. Say how the caregiver would arrive. In ACS 2020–2024, a tenth of Alameda workers ride public transit, so name the nearest bus line if you can, and say whether there is parking at the door.
Be just as specific about language. At home, 34.5% of Alameda residents aged five or older use a language other than English, and 19.6% use an Asian or Pacific Island language; 11.4% of residents speak English less than very well. If your mother is most comfortable in Cantonese, Tagalog or Spanish, put that in the first line of the post. About a quarter of the city's people were born outside the country, so bilingual applicants are common enough to ask for. The profiles listed here change as caregivers join, and the postings above update as Alameda families publish them.

Evaluating caregivers in Alameda
Ask which credentials an applicant holds and check them. A certified nursing assistant can be looked up with CDPH; several of the seven nursing facilities on Willow Street, Westline Drive, Blanding Avenue and Fernside Boulevard employ CNAs, so local applicants often have facility experience. An Alameda County IHSS provider has completed the county's orientation and Live Scan fingerprints. Aides sent by one of the ten licensed home care organizations with Alameda offices must be on the state Home Care Aide Registry; an independent caregiver may or may not be. Then call two past employers, let your parent take part in the final interview, and pay for one trial shift with a relative present. CaregiverConnect does not screen anyone. You may buy a background report yourself once the applicant agrees in writing.

- Have you cared for someone after a stay at Alameda Hospital or at one of the Willow Street rehabilitation centers?

- Can you book and ride AIM subsidized trips with her, or would you drive her yourself?

| IHSS provider wage, Alameda County | $22.10 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Alameda is one of the cities with its own wage law: $17.76 an hour from July 1, 2026 for anyone working at least two hours a week inside the city, under Municipal Code Chapter 4-60. The city's notice does not say how it treats a household employing a caregiver directly, so call 510-747-6859 if you are unsure; paying at least that rate avoids the question. Other markers: $17.28, the May 2025 BLS median for aides across the five-county metro; $22.10, what Alameda County IHSS pays its providers; and $40, CareScout's statewide median for an hour of agency home care. A private hire usually lands between the IHSS wage and the agency price. Hire a personal attendant yourself and you owe overtime for more than 9 hours on any day or 45 in any week. If your parent is on Medi-Cal, ask the county about IHSS hours on (510) 577-1800 before you settle on private pay.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
