How to find an in-home caregiver in South San Francisco

Home care in South San Francisco tends to start inside the family. More than a third of local households (37.4%) have a member 65 or older, and a common request is for someone to cover the hours when adult children are at work or on the road: getting a parent up and dressed, preparing lunch, keeping an eye on medication, and walking with them to the bus or to an appointment. Others need help for a parent who lives alone; 1,982 residents aged 65 and over head a one-person household here.

Write your posting with the details a caregiver will use to decide. Give the 94080 ZIP code and the neighborhood, the days and hours, any stairs inside or outside, and which language your relative prefers. Spanish, Tagalog and Chinese are each spoken at home by thousands of residents, and 21.1% of people aged five and older report English below "very well"; say whether you need Cantonese or Mandarin, Tagalog or Spanish. Caregivers living nearby can then respond; the profiles shown above update as people register in and around the city.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in South San Francisco

Ask for paper proof of any credential. Licensed home care agencies can place only aides who are on the state's Home Care Aide Registry. An independent caregiver who chose to register has passed the state's background check for it. Nursing assistants carry a CDPH certificate with a number you can look up, and IHSS providers in this county went through San Mateo County enrollment, orientation and a background check of their own. The rest is up to you. Meet candidates at your relative's own address and let your relative ask questions too, ring two of the candidate's past employers, hire a screening firm of your choice once the candidate signs a consent form, and book one paid trial shift before settling the weekly hours. CaregiverConnect does not vet applicants or run any background checks.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Can you keep up a conversation in Cantonese, Tagalog or Spanish with my mother for a whole shift, medicines included?
  • Have you helped someone in the first days home from Kaiser on El Camino Real, and what did that involve?
  • Could you drop my father at the Teglia Center adult day program on Grand Avenue and collect him afterward?
  • How would you get here: car, BART at the Mission Road station, SamTrans or the free South City Shuttle?
  • There are steps up to our front door. What is your approach with a walker user on outside steps?
  • What do you do if my grandmother becomes confused and wants to leave the house?
  • May I see proof of your registry listing, nurse assistant certificate or IHSS enrollment?
  • What hourly rate do you charge Monday to Friday, and how much for nights and weekends?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in South San Francisco: hourly rates and schedules

Common requests here are weekday daytime shifts while relatives work, often four to eight hours, plus short morning and evening visits for bathing and bedtime. Families also post Tuesday and Thursday escort to the senior lunch at the Teglia Center, short-term support after a discharge from hospital, or a couple of overnights each week so a family member can rest.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Inside South San Francisco the 2026 wage floor is $18.15 an hour, not the $16.90 state figure above. The city's own page speaks of businesses, yet the employer definition in Chapter 8.71 of the municipal code reaches natural persons too and protects workers who log two or more hours a week inside city limits, so a family hiring directly should pay no less than $18.15. Tips cannot be counted toward it. Experienced caregivers will also know San Mateo County pays IHSS providers $21.70, and families paying privately usually end up between that figure and agency rates, more for nights or heavy lifting. Overtime applies as well: California treats a personal attendant's hours past nine in a workday, or past 45 in a workweek, as time-and-a-half hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
