How to find an in-home caregiver in San Mateo
Many San Mateo families arrange care from a distance or around demanding jobs. A parent may be living alone in an apartment or in the house the family bought decades ago, while the adult children live in another city or work full days. Hiring a private caregiver in that situation means deciding how many hours of help are needed, who will check in, and how the caregiver will reach the house. Useful services are close by: the city's Senior Center at 2645 Alameda de las Pulgas serves lunch and runs classes, the county IHSS office is up the same street at number 2000, and San Mateo Medical Center's Senior Care Center on West 39th Avenue treats patients 60 and over.
In your posting, say where in San Mateo the home is (94401, 94402 or 94403), what a typical day looks like, and the language your parent would choose for a long conversation. ACS counts 19,909 Spanish speakers and 9,121 Chinese speakers in the city, with smaller groups speaking Tagalog (2,786) and Slavic languages (1,454). Caregivers from around the city can then reply, and the profile list on this page refreshes as more people join.

Evaluating caregivers in San Mateo
Verify credentials before trusting them. California's Home Care Aide Registry is required for anyone placed by a licensed agency and voluntary for independents, who must pass the state background check to be listed. CNAs hold a certificate from CDPH after passing the state competency exam. IHSS providers in San Mateo County have enrolled, sat through an orientation and passed a background check. Your own checks matter as much: meet candidates in the home with your parent taking part, phone at least two previous employers, have a screening company run a check with the applicant's written consent, and book a paid trial shift. CaregiverConnect does not screen or vet caregivers.

What in-home care costs in San Mateo: hourly rates and schedules
Common San Mateo requests are a few hours on three to five weekdays for someone living alone, a daily morning visit for dressing and medication, several weeks of help after surgery, regular escorts to medical appointments, and overnight stays as dementia advances. Out-of-town families often ask for a short daily message or call about how the day went.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The state minimum in the table is not the figure that matters inside city limits: the City of San Mateo requires $18.60 an hour for 2026 and $19.25 from January 1, 2027, covering every employee with at least two hours of work a week in the city. The city's page does not say whether a family hiring for its own home counts as an employer; paying the city rate removes the question, and the county Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement (olse@smcgov.org) answers queries. Caregivers will also know that IHSS pays $21.70 in San Mateo County. Long shifts cost more: state domestic worker rules call for time and a half after nine hours on a single day or 45 across the week.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in San Mateo: frequently asked questions
What do we have to pay a caregiver in San Mateo?
The City of San Mateo minimum is $18.60 an hour through December 2026 and $19.25 from January 1, 2027. Many experienced caregivers expect more, since IHSS pays $21.70 in the county.
Is the San Mateo city wage the same as the county rate?
No. The city is a separate government from the County of San Mateo, and its ordinance covers work done inside the city only. Unincorporated areas and other cities set their own figures.
What are the steps for my mother to get IHSS here?
Start with a referral, either on the county website or by phone at 650-573-3900, then have her doctor complete the SOC 873 form within 45 days. A social worker visits to decide her hours. See the San Mateo County IHSS guide.
Is there a place my father can spend part of the day?
The San Mateo Senior Center welcomes anyone 50 or older for lunch, classes and games. A caregiver can take him there and collect him, which gives the day some structure.
Where can I get advice if I manage care from out of state?
Peninsula Family Service's Older Adult Resource Line, (650) 780-7542, points families to local services, and the county's Linkages program offers case management for frail older adults.
Has CaregiverConnect screened the caregivers who reply?
No. We do not run background checks, so confirm credentials, call references and arrange your own screening before anyone starts.
